Do I need a multi tool?

Have you found a decent pad yet? Ended up with cheap and expensive but they all seem to heat up and the Velcro disappears. Partly user error I know but sometimes I plead innocence that it was my fault...

I just use the cheap Erbauer ones and replace as and when :)

Thanks everyone for your replies. I might ask for one for my birthday. I have a large collection of bits of saw blade, pointy things, and lots of differently sized sanding blocks which have done their job so far.

I use mine a lot! It is one of the few power tools which will cut flush, so if a dowel is sticking out of wood it will cut it completely flush without marking the surrounding timber. When the router has left the mortice with rounded corners the multitool is quicker than a chisel for getting them straight. The windows I have, have a sloped bottom rail which was great for single glazing but needs taking flat for double glazing, and there is no other tool which can do the job.

I will say though, like most tools corded is going to give much more power, and be faster and neater, so unless you really need cordless buy the highest power corded one you can.

Thanks for your comments. I notice these multitools seem to be very carpentry oriented. Are there other uses than woodwork?

I used it to cut out the wall for a new backbox but I'm sure I'll be told there is a simpler way :p

I used mine recently to cut a hole in the ceiling.

Honestly it has so many uses, i even used it the other day to cut a big branch from a tree as cildnt find my saw

You thinking of a Dremel type device? Multi tools as they're popularly defined oscillate.

Has anyone tried the theory that they won't cut your skin...

I suppose you might say that it does what it says on the tin, and will cut plastics, metal, pipes, almost anything. There's also a more blunt 'scraper' tool which is great for getting putty from window frames and other places.

Great for stripping thick old horrible gloss paint off window sills!

Use my DeWalt all the time, really handy for odd bits of cutting and sanding. A few times its been a real get out of jail card and really come into its own. I'd say buy.

Pro tip - erbauer blades and sanding pads (which you will overheat and ruin the hook and loop) are a fraction of the price of dewalt and decent quality.
