I have both mpc-hc and vlc player so do I need the k-lite codec pack that I have installed?
I only play avi tbh, I only ask because I noticed theres an update and not sure if I need it.

TIA

Well if you use mpc-hc I would assume you would use the codecs in that pack or you may as well use wmp. Personally I'd say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Just Haali Media Splitter which is better than the built in Matroska splitter so disable the Matroska filter within MPC-HC.

I use AC3 Filter for AC3 and DTS audio films though as I can up the gain because standard AC3 and DTS streams are quieter than AAC/mp3 audio films so it helps greatly. Plus you can force decode to 2 channels so you're getting an even more clear sound if you're on 2 speakers not 5.1/6ch.

Get your mpc-hc from this site

http://www.xvidvideo.ru/

it's updated almost daily, so you always have the very latest version :)

You don't need any codecs installed for this to work, it uses internal filters

If you're only watching .avi files, then I don't think you should need it.

Depends on the OS, I'm pretty sure that XP didn't even come with any avi decoders.

I personally use Shark007's Codec pack as well as the 64-bit addon. But that said, I do watch lots of anime, so deal with mkv's and lots of other obscure codecs.

For you, Media Player Classic should get you by just fine.

No you don't need anything else, I use a few extra filters but only because I do a lot of tweaking.

mrk, Haali's splitter is no better than Gabest's which is used in MPC-HC (they're both fairly equal on what they can and cannot do) and you can do all that to the audio with built in settings and filters.

While I do agree with 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' if I don't need it I'd rather not have it on my laptop (wait until later when my next thread is 'buggar can't play any avi's' what have I done :p)

Thanks mrk, but tbh as long as I can see and hear it thats good enough for me, i'm not an audiophile or whatever the word is (someone who seeks audio perfection or close to it)

bledd, cheers for the site, but I need a bit of assistance if you don't mind, I click on 'media player classic home cinema' on the left, click todays release at the top, I see ones a complete package with and without installer and ones just the mpc.exe, which one would I need?

Cheers lads, I'll get rid of k-lite and see how it goes from there.

I use this page

http://www.xvidvideo.ru/media-player-classic-home-cinema-x86-x64/

click the top link

Then I choose Media Player Classic HomeCinema x86 (Complete package): -this one has an installer for the program

I use the 32bit one on my 64bit machines too, it's only a media player after all :)

Install this first to get it to fully work

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3

That is the latest direct x9 files for XP/Vista/7 (32 and 64bit), totally safe to install

Thanks mrk, but tbh as long as I can see and hear it thats good enough for me, i'm not an audiophile or whatever the word is (someone who seeks audio perfection or close to it)

That wasn't the point :p The point was that the haali splitter is better at detecting and allowing you to choose audio tracks, subtitles and chapters that many films are now containing, especially mkv and some mp4 movies with selectable subtitles and audio channels!

Of course, as above it's of not much use if all you watch is .avi files which don't have the extra features!

Thanks bledd, all working help mucho appreciated. :)

Sooory mrk, I understand now. Quick question though, if listening using headphones would you notice a difference between ac3 and dts while watching dvds?

Hmm dts is slightly quieter than ac3 (both are quiet anyway) but without a digital/optical receiver to decode those streams it would be hard to tell any difference between them and since that would involve an AV receiver you'd need quite an expensive one at that to tell the difference too :o

AC3 filter allows you to up the gain and enable dynamic range control for ac3/dts so the sound is much better :)

Dynamic range hmmm good....
Don't think I'll worry about that then. :p

A couple of things about media player classic home cinema from this site, the first one I would imagine this is because its a daily build? If I have a video playing and I set mpc to minimal so I only see the video and not the toolbar at the top, when I maximize a video then double click on it to make it smaller again it doesn't go back to the minimal setting, instead it goes back to maximum?

The other thing and I havn't been able to do this even with the official version you get from sourceforge, the option 'remember file position' is greyed out.
This is no biggy but as were on the subject I thought i'd ask.

Mine remembers position, try deleting mpc-hc.ini as it may be a setting stuck in there.

As for the maximise/minimise I also cannot replicate that issue, again, delete the ini file and restart again so MPC create a new ini.

You should have MPC-HC set to save all settings in the ini file instead of the registry too btw.

Cheers mrk, but still no different, I've even reinstalled and still the same, if I have a video as minimal, then maximize it, when I minimize it the caption and menu bar at the top is there, I then have to press 3, then 1 to get it back to minimal.

Oh well, I'll wait until the next build, maybe that will work for me.

Try the Combined Community Codec Pack, its the only codec pack I've ever used and it works great. Once you have CCCP installed, your PC can handle virtually any video file.

Yes, PC, whereas MPC-HC has everything built in without the need for codec packs.

SimonC, just to confirm, I'm having that same issue where I can't get the title (ctrl + 0) to stay off with these newer builds

I'm sure it'll get fixed at some point

Cheers bledd, did try it on the pc and had the same issue so thought it wasn't just my laptop, will keep trying the newer builds.
