do online stores have to honour price cockups?

Christ, 20 grand for the first chandelier on the second page. Looks good though.

Just out of interest. There are a few chandeliers on there with the value of 0.00. Which one did he try and order ?

love these comments - yes I said to him they would probably cancel it :)

and yes if he had put one through, maybe he'd have been lucky... he said his company made a similar mistake in the past and they had to honour it, but I guess we'll see ha

I'm pretty sure he's mistaken if his company was trading in the UK. Any advertised price is not legally binding, no matter what it is. Legally, it's an invitation to make an offer at that price and not the terms of a contract. A contract only exists when seller and buyer both agree to that price for that purchase. It might be a messy business if the payment has been accepted and the item delivered. That could be argued as de facto agreement to the price by both parties, but if the price is obviously wrong (e.g. being £0.00 as in the OP's case) I wouldn't bet a bent ha'penny on that in court because it's obviously someone trying to abuse the law in order to get something for nothing.

Of course, it might often be better for a company to eat the loss either because legal costs would be more expensive and/or because of bad publicity.

The most extreme example of this sort of thing that I know of was in the USA where Pepsi mistakenly offered a fully functional Harrier jet for US$700,000 as part of a joke in an advert. The ad had the jet advertised at an amount of points that would require buying a sea of Pepsi, but they hadn't taken into account a seperate offer allowing people to purchase points for cash and it turned out that US$700K was enough to buy enough points to meet the displayed cost of the jet. A person turned up with US$700K and wanted the plane. It went to court, where he unsurprisingly lost the case.

Anyone have the link so I can put it on HUKD? Then they will definitely realise.

As for contracts. It is something like a contract is formed when payment is taken, but T&Cs usually make this dispatch.

However, if it is obviously a price error and the buyer is likely to know this, then they still don't have to honour it or something.

What does it say about me? I haven't purchased anything :p

@muon link in op.

Your brother is knowingly hoping to take advantage of someone's mistake and do them out of a considerable amount of money.

You also hope the same thing and think it is so fabulous you have shared a link to encourage others to do the same.

This mindset is disgusting.

Don't be a daft, I laughed at his optimism, what will be will be, but going captain planet on something that will likely be resolved by cancel is just being stupid for the sake of being stupid. Get off the high horse, the fox will catch himself.

These threads are always a bit of a laugh - just Google the very same question and it will be answered for you.
As for "ordered 6" this is one of the most annoying things I read over and over again on similar threads, especially over at HUKD.
Lets say I'm a retailer and I manage to mess pricing up. Lets say 50 orders get through at a silly reduced price. I might think for the sake of some great publicity, free advertising etc, I'll let them go through.
Then we get the "Yer, I ordered 10" and the "ordered half a dozen for Ebay" posts. Now as a retailer I'm not going to spend the time going through the orders or even thinking about honouring them, I'm just cancelling the lot. There was the recent 3D headset for Galaxy S7/8 at Vodafone. A number of orders went through and they have been honoured. All single purchases as far as anyone knows. If however it had been abused to hell, as they usually are, then nobody would have got anything.

This particular thread is slightly different of course. Item sells for several hundred listed at zero - well order what you like, 1, 10, 1000 - highly unlikely that one is going through. But I do wish people would stop thinking entirely about themselves when it comes to pricing mistakes, just make that single purchase. If you're lucky you, and loads of other people get a bargain. Keep on abusing and truly, you're just ******* it up for everyone.

This tbh.
I don't condone his actions, I just find it funny that all of a sudden he needs chandaliers... 6 of them.
