Do we really need a 5090 ?

I watched a good video on graphics v art style last night, I don't think higher fidelity is neccasarily the answer, Bioshock is nearly 20 years old, yet it is still a visual delight and graphical classic because of a fantastic art style implemnted by people with a cinematic eye.

A lot of modern games are just an ill-thought out mess graphically.
I am the same with Bioshock Infinite. It's about ten years old now. But when you load up that first part of the game and enter the city...It just looks amazing on my OLED TV, or PC. The art design for Bioshock Infinite is still amazing in 2023.

I played Starfield the other day, the design seemed so bland and boring in comparison to many other games. No Mans Sky looks far more attractive! So, art style is a winner in my eyes also. Oh and music. Battlefield One still amazes me with its music, and that came out in 2016.

Most of those games run great on an RTX 3070, (apart from Starfield?) I see no point in an RTX 5090 unless we get a another Crysis (the game) moment. And it turned out Crysis ran that badly because of...poor optimisation.

Agreed, Starfield looks like it has a porridge filter on it.

Shock as top tier product costs top dollar. Next up, the sun will rise tommorow morning!

You don't have to like the pricing but you shouldn't be surprised by it. Pick a product that suits your budget and get on with your life!

As for the OPs (ridiculous) question - You wont like the day when GPU manufacturers decide they dont need to continue developing a product line.

Same just to see 4090 buyers sweat a bit. Everyone has a liquidation point.

Sure not the case for everyone but your average 4090 buyer isn't thinking twice whether they can afford 1-2K, 3K, whatever. There is always going to be a market for an actual first best product. Where that falls apart is the line up below.

I hope the 5090 starts at £2500 just for the lol’s.
Wouldn't be much lol's when the 5080 would cost 2 grand...
Need stuff to come in at similar/lower prices to keep the used market ticking. I have the money to buy graphics cards, but I just can't bring myself to spend extreme dollar on mid-range cards. The wife would also have my head. :D

Oh they certainly will. I personally know only two 4090 buyers and both had to stretch out to afford it and there is no way they would buy a 5090 at 2.5k.

They would join the rest of the crowd wondering where did it all go wrong.

I certainly wouldn’t pay that much this time around.
I only bought 4090 thanks to mining as my 3080 and 2x 3060ti (all FE purchased at msrp) paid for it by mining and resale prices.
I’m on minimum wage btw.

No need for them to wonder, they brought it upon themselves. This goes right back to these early days of Titan and has only accelarated since.

The problem for the 4090 owners is that they're going to have to wait a very long time for a card that can perform 50% + better at midrange pricing, if they don't want to or can't afford to upgrade at the top end every gen.

Don't worry 4090 owners are already writing mental gymnastic essays in their head as to why they need to spend another 2K on a 5090.

:D

Almost £2300 for the strix as well, basically back at covid pricing levels without the pandemic to pump the consumer...

Interesting when I'm seeing sales everywhere and lots of discretionary items not selling well. In the next 12 months there's going to be even less money floating around, I'd get my stock shifted asap if it was me.
