do XFX have a problem with PSU's?

I built my PC in late December 2011, and used an 850W XFX pro and noticed the fan was making clicking noises and was generally noisy. I decided to set up an RMA with ocuk for 26th January 2012.

5 weeks later, i have my 'new' XFX psu which seems to have the same problem, only this time it also has a noise which i can only describe as a black key being pressed on an organ (only a lot quieter) as well as the clicking noise. could this be 2 failed fan controllers in a row?

Now, ive never heard a case fan like this, so why should 2 psu's in a row be like this?

The PSU is a rebranded Seasonic (so ive read), however xfx have choses ot use a cheaper fan, presumably to cut costs.

Is it too late to ask for a refund/exchange from OCUK?

have you experienced this?

I have heard some things about their PSU's that, I will just say I'm not going to risk getting one. I am sure many people run their PSU's with no problems, there may just be a few unlucky ones.

You could change the fan in the PSU? Might fix the problem, but you shouldn't have to, I would speak to OcUK and see what they can do, if they can do anything ;)

Sometimes there can be a perception problem with the end user. Not saying there is with yourself but it's always best to check against someone who doesn't have a problem. Ask someone 'without' a problem to make a small video of their PSU running and then compare to yours. If yours is clearly louder then RMA again.

This is a good idea, however i dont know anybody with one :(

just to give you some comparison, my case fans (2* 120mm fractal and 1* scythe Juni 1900rpm) are running at 40% and my PSU is easily louder.

I recently bought (not from OC) a XFX 650W XXX edition, I had terrible fan clicking from the start (like you loudest thing in my PC). I sent it back and they refused to accept anything was wrong with it :@ When it's sorted I think I'm going to go for one of the corsair AX series since the fan doesn't turn on unless the PSU is getting hot under load (Y)

The XFX PSUs sound like a good choice for the price but this gamble as to whether you get fan noise is terrible. I would have quite happily replaced the fan to avoid all this trouble, thing is though, I wanted my warranty intact!

Clicking should never happen. I don't think the part is in danger of combusting or anything but it would bother me tremendously. Hold your ground and don't back down. It should not 'click'

Been running my XFX 650w XXX Edition PSU in my latest build since July last year and it's been totally faultless, and I remember when discussing and considering which parts for the build on here that nearly everyone recommended the XFX PSU's at the time.

I take it that it's only within the last few months that people have reported problems with their new XFX PSU's?

Just to add some balance to this thread, like LEK-89, my XFX 850W XXX Edition has been faultless so far too, quiet as a mouse, I bought it a few weeks ago from OCUK, so maybe just a bad batch of fans?

I used the 'file a claim' feature and got my money back in just a couple of hours. As opposed to the poorly strung together "English" replies that took them several days to do. (External German seller on a rainforest themed website, am I allowed to say that?)

I dont know weather its just me being more susceptible to the noise than others
I only really notice it at night when the road noise dies down (live near the A40)
Changing the fan has crossed my mind, as i really don't want to wait another 5 weeks, but as you mention, i would loose the warranty.

I'll be having an xfx pro core edition 650w delivered in a few days, so I'll see what the noise is like. I expect a high standard, and not this clicking that some have reported, there are plenty who have not had those noise issues with the fan though. I ran into all the reports of so called coil whine on corsair and fan clicking on xfx but it didn't put me off in the end.

If I get any problems I'm likely to return it and get an ocz instead. The fans on my old hipers were so quiet my antec case fans were louder so I hope the same for an xfx, many people report them as being silent.

No problem here, bought mine from OcUK in November 2010 and has been running flawlessly and clickless ever since. I bought it based on seriously glowing reviews, like these:

Don't get OCZ. Mine died and the after sales service is crap.

Here's my XFX on the day I installed her. :)

It's odd how people have completely the opposite experience relating to brands. I've used OCZ PSUs for the last 5 years and never had a single problem. However today I received the XFX Pro 850w which simply does not work, sparks coming from the unit. Needless to say that was my first and last XFX PSU. I know it's probably a one off but, not a great first impression.

Look... the bottom line is.. some products just end up being faulty. Even the fabled Sony and Apple products are sometimes defective on arrival or shortly afterwards.

It happens. I would place more in how your problem is handled.

I have recently bought an XFX pro (Not your 850W model though), and there are no issues with it. Very well build unit (externally speaking).

EDIT: Are you sure it's not something resonating?

There is a resonating noise coming from it, yeah, I forgot to mention it :p
The noise has nothing to do with air moving or anything, the fan just has an oddly noisy motor in it which does seem to be causing resonance with the psu case somehow.

As I said I was getting a xfx pro core edition 650w and it's been working great for over a month now without any noticeable problems, the fan is silent in my antec p180 case even with the side panel off and I haven't heard any clicking. So far very impressed with the purchase and was able to deal with it being non modular without much problem, I've even refitted the bottom fan back into the P180 case and still managed to keep all the cables out the way for good airflow.

Does that mean you'll skip Antec and Corsair too?

Thats EXACTLY what haapened with me with the same PSU.
On my RMA email to Scan I attached links to Youtube Vids and forum posts all pointing to this same problem.

They failed the RMA saying it was "normal PSU noise".
I disagreed and tried to reason with them..was like dealing with robots, not bloomin interested.

Took 28 days for them to organise the refund too.
Shocking Customer Service.

Got a Seasonic X760 from elsewhere.
COMPLETELY silent, even when playing Half Life 2 @ 1080p full tilt.

I would avoid XFX or if you are dead set on one, buy from OCUK, they guys here will look after you if anything goes wrong.

I've only ever had a slight revised XFX graphics card, and that was abit faulty since I got it, replaced it about a year later, when it really started going wrong.

For any other customer services, used Logitech, been absolutely brilliant both times, and have only ever talked to the OCZ customer service people, but they seemed fine to me, quite helpful and informative. Mind you, I've just had one of my OCZ RAM sticks die, not long out of warranty either :(
