Do you leave your computer on all of the time?

Thanks, it's just I heard someone say switching it on and off "wears out" the parts faster. Sounded like rubbish though.

Yeah that's bull, it's just electrically switching off.

I just put mine to sleep. If you don't switch it off at the socket after you shut down then it's exactly the same as leaving it on sleep.

I used to do that and i find it is much more healthier for the pc, as starting up and shutting down causes more wear and tear on the component than leaving it running.

But vibration of my pc due to thick carpet and cheap house construction vibrates through my entire house. So when i am sleeping i hear this repetitive buzz. I used to leave my pc running in my room while i slept. for over 10 years.

I turn my pc on in the morning before i leave for work and connect to it all day from work.

My pfsense box runs 24/7 though and that is silent.

Off if i'm not doing anything on it. Or unless i forget to turn it off. Or if i plan to return to it and just don't come back.

When I wasn't paying the leccy bill, then on most of the time, now that I am paying the bill it is only on when I need it.

Home - Only left on overnight if i'm downloading, else it's off.

Work - PC is a crock of the proverbial, so it's left on as it take about 10 minutes to boot and then another 10 minutes to open everything i need for the day here at sunny VM.

I have an SSD on my OS drive but still leave it on 24/7. It's silent, fast and consumes little power when idle so I don't bother turning it off. My HDDs are better off for it as well.

It is true to some extent, turning on and off a PC with mechanical drives will shorten the lifespan of those drives. By how much depends on how often power is cycled and the state of those drives.

Think about it. It's a spinning piece of metal that goes from being hot to cold and that cycle plays out multiple times a day. That metal will warp over time.

I would recommend investing in power efficient components and making sure power management features are enabled in the BIOS. My 4.3GHz quad runs at 1.6GHz when just running normal tasks like watching a video/browsing the web etc. All my fans are at 50% at all times.

I used to get this but found some special rubber feet for the base of my case which has completely removed this problem.

LOL, just remembering the days I used to put up with a 92cm Delta fan running all day/night in my bedroom - sounded like a banshee :D
