Do you own your own children/yourself?

I was having a discussion about citizen and your own children's ownership. It's good to know the fundamentals etc. So what's the relationship between the State and us or our children. Obvioulsy if we commit a crime then we are arrested/jailed etc. But even in our so-called free lives does the State still actually own you?
I know exactly what you're talking about and you're right.

The one I find interesting is that if you get a limb amputated, you don't get the option to take it home. As far as I know.

If your neighbour trims your tree, he's supposed to offer the trimmings back, when a garage changes car parts, you can ask for the old ones, but not your own fingers or legs etc.

I think there might be some concern with people inappropriately disposing of said bits which then prompts an investigation when they're found years later.
...or I could be saying nonsense and it's just so you're not tempted to cook up a stew!

Nobody owns a child. You cannot own a human being.

Dont be daft! Of course you can own people. :p

People have been owning other people for as long as we have had organised societies.

Although in modern "Civilised" societies the idea of outright "Ownership" has gone out of fashion (For now anyway), there are plenty of accepted practices that come very close to it.

I am sure I recall reading that, for example, recent definitions of Slavery for legislative purposes had to be carefully worded/Given exceptions to permit the legal enforcement of Child support/Maintenance payments.

In principle, one can also be "Called Up"/"Drafted" too.

Outright Slavery didn't go out of fashion because of some sort of mystic sense of human enlightenment.

It went out of fashion because of the Steam Engine. (And later the ICE)

That and that it is easier to enslave people with money and debt than with chains and whips...

If Oil went up to $1000/Bbl and stayed there, there would be Black people picking cotton in the deep south quicker than you can say "Southern Comfort" and galleys plying the Med quicker than you can say "Trireme".

Our current societies and its attitudes are the historical exception, not the rule!

:p

Signing the birth certificate created a taxable entity for the state.

Of course you don’t own a person, this is clearly why you don’t see people for sale on eBay or Gumtree.
