Do you work your proper hours?

I work 6 on 4 off. Usually 2 6am starts followed by 2 8am starts followed by 2 2pm starts. Not legally allowed to work longer than an 8 hour shift, get away an hour or 2 early maybe 2 days out of the 6. Also only allowed to do a maximum of 2 overtime shifts per month.

Still at university, but during recent internship:

contracted hours: 9 - 5 Mon to Fri

Actual hours: Well let's put it this way, My worst week ended with me working over the weekend...all weekend. I slept on a sofa in the office for just 5 hours from 6am on Friday morning until 1pm on Monday morning (that is 3 hours on Fri, 2 on Sat, and none on Sunday).

Pretty much now i do, but if we're ever required to stay late to finish off something then it's usually only an hour max

8:00-4:30 (On Swiss time).

If you work more than that, you lose concentration, end up making mistakes, etc.

Because of the way we work, tasks have to be completed, and all code committed daily at 4:30. If it's not in by 4:30 you miss the window, so you might as well go home.

If anyone is spotted putting in too many hours, they're told to ease up.

If the **** hits the fan at our place then I will normally go home :) .... mainly because I can do the vast majority of my job sitting on the sofa at home VPN'ed in so if the problem is going to take all night to fix that's a lot better than being stuck in the office ...

I work 37.5 hours a week

I swap shifts every week either doing 7-3:30 or 10-6:30. I am not expected to stay late and usually leave on time, occasionally though I am in the middle of something and may stay on for 5 mins just to make sure my work is finished up.

I don't mind staying on for a short time if something has gone wrong or w/e - but it's very rare for this to happen

Most people seem to be getting a raw deal.

As long as I work 40 hours a week they don't really care, going to be starting at 1pm when the snow hits for fresh tracks everyday - yum!

Its 8:30 to 5:30 for me but I work whatever hours needed, regardless of the pay. I am the manager and need the store where I work to succeed.

In my experience some people are never willing to give up any spare time or give any extra effort than asked, and its generally these sorts of people that will still be doing the same job in 10 years time.

at least they will still have a head full of hair that hasn't started turning grey

This is ture;) I am not saying its always a bad thing, some people dont have ambition, they would rather live a more simple working life. I just get frustrated with people when they moan about pay and job prospects and then fail to show any initiative or fail to put in any extra hard work.

Contracted 8am - sunset on my working days, which can vary from 2 to 5 days a week. Do quite a few 8am-10pm days in the summer.

I suppose it depends on the employer

I and a few colleagues work a lot of hours sometimes and don't even get so much as a thanks , hardly an incentive for us it is? (although we still do it just for the extra cash)

9-5 with no reduction for lunch break,go to the shop/cafe and return without taking the ****. If it's quiet the boss might leave early so I get to go early!

Working in Halfords gave me a bad attitude but int he end it's not the customers fault that you haven't been 'allowed' to leave at your shift end. I'm sure I work a good few days for free over the last few christmas times aswell but it now works on I do them no favours and expect none in return.

Mon-Fri 630pm - 300am Leave on the dot and arrive at about 625 No way would I give my time to them unpaid. get 2x 15mins and an hour lunch :D

I think that's a bit short-sighted - and assumes that you actually have to be physically present to be able to add value to your job and/or the business you work for.

I am in the office for my core hours, but I spend a lot of my spare time reading and studying and learning - not necessarily for anything work related, but certainly to do with my career. So I attend development/management seminars, I spend a lot of my free time thinking about work stuff, if not actually doing it. I spend my commute into work sorting out in my head what I want to get done today, and on the way home I work out what went well/badly for the day and how to make tomorrow better.

Someone could be at their desk for 7 1/2 hours and do 1 hours work, whereas I will be at my desk strictly from 8:30 to 4:30, but think about work or work related aspects for upwards of 16 hours a day.

I mostly work my contracted hours but because we are on flexitime I tend to vary my start/finish times.

I'll work more if needed and take a day or two off once the hours have accrued but I won't work for free, I'm paid to work after all!
