I really cannot see an end to this madness. I think this thread might become an infinite series of the following:-

Poster 1: It doesn't equal 1.
Poster 2: Yes it doesn, here's a proof.
Poster 1: No it doesn't.
Poster 2: Here's another proof.

erm 0.99r = 0.9r

It just means double 9s are repeated instead of single.

no the real numbers form a field, that means they follow certain rules, and under those rules 1 is the identity element so any number times 1 is that number so even if 0.999r wasnt 1, 1x0.9r is still 0.9r

Nope. 0.9999999999999999... does not equal 1. However, if you were to round the value of it, it would approximate to the value of 1, or 1.0, etc!

Has anyone saying that 0.9r does not equal 1 come up with some non-philosophical argument yet???

And in response to the questions about 0.9r *1, as AlphaNumeric has said before 1 is the multiplicative inverse, which means that anything multiplied by 1 remains the same. (This is one of the basic axioms of mathematics). Therefore, the answer is 0.9r, or 1, but we are back to the starting point, no progress is made by this pointless exercise.
