Does AMD even cross your mind?

GPU's yes have a R9 390 currently and I'd recommend it to anyone I havn't had an Nvidia card for a decade. Theres no way I'm buying into Nvidia/Gysync anti-competitive practices and prices and I'm not into high end cards generally, I just can't justify that kind of money.

CPU, no sadly. I've had plenty of AMD cpu's but not for a long time, last chip was a AMD 64 3400, it was a great chip but I certainly wouldn't have one now. Fact is you're better off buying a used Intel than a new AMD these day which is shame as Intel are taking the mick with their prices and general stagnation in the market. If AMD were even remotely competitive in this area I'd snap one up in an instant and extend Intel the middle finger honestly.

Gpu wise anything below a 980 ti price point amd wins easily imo and above nvidia. As for cpus amds cpus are fine for low end builds and can be very cost effective but for mid range and high end intel all the way i have a 5820k.

+1

I wouldn't recommend a AMD CPU for a high end build to a friend.

GPU though, I would recommend a 390 and 390X, I don't know enough about the Fury to comment. I haven't had a High end Nvidia card since I went from a 8600 to a 9800GTX+ and was left disappointed and it artifacted after a couple of months. (so I went 4890, 7870, 7970, 390X...) but I am the least fanboy / brandsnob person in the world.

My next GPU will definitely be an AMD. I'm trying to save for a 390 but it's going to take me ages. I hope I don't cop out and buy a 380 because I'll really regret it having a 1440p monitor. :p

From what I've read, the 960/970 cards don't really compete in this price range.

By the time you save up then, Polaris will no doubt be out then.

Major gains over the 380 you might cop out with :D

GPUs yup cause the gpu just below the flagship is normally really good bang per buck.

Cpu not since before core2.
