Does anyone else find Bioshock scary?

The sound in Bioshock was what did it for me, particularly the shotgun part the op describes. Was the first game I tried my 7.1 setup on and I thought it was brilliant.

I started Bioshock on hard as I do all games, and I got to the very point you're talking about and whimped out. I didn't like the idea of dying to be honest with you, and my fear was holding me back from my normally pretty good fps skills. I replayed it on medium and didn't have many problems with fear after that, mainly because I knew if I was jumped from 180 I could turn and quickly slaugter them without much trouble. And they did that a lot in Bioshock.

The story I thought was good, and I liked the progressive and changing gameplay.. it was definitely one of the least repetitive fps I've ever played.

As for dead space, I think Bioshock kind of cemented an anti-fear of horror fps. I didn't really find it too scary, a little jumpy because the enemies tend to literally attack from all directions. The story didn't give me the creeps either as I just found it quite acceptable. The Bioshock story shook me up because of the whole rapture/underwater thing.. It was just genuinely very very creepy.

It's weird, I get scared silly by a lot of games like this (STALKER, Resi Evil, Dead Space etc) but Bioshock didn't scare me in the slightest...strange. I think it may be because there was so much more to focus on than the fear, whereas you play Resi and Dead Space (and STALKER in the underground bits) for the fear itself!

Incidentally I thought that Bioshock's story was one of the best I've ever played, especially as it takes the wee out of the somewhat ridiculous idea of philosophical objectivism :)

Made me jump a few times compared to hundreds in System Shock 2... although I do play System Shock 2 at least once sometimes twice a year :)

I wouldn’t say it was scary for me. Creepy most certainly and atmospheric without doubt. Everyone’s experience is different :)

FEAR? scary? seriously??

I don't understand how anyone finds games scary, the scariest games I have played are the Silent Hill series and that wasn't so much pant-wetting as creepy and tense.

FEAR, Doom3, Res Evil series, System Shock 2, Bioshock, Thief 3 (cradle), Condemned, AVP etc, played them all and never experienced more than the occasional jump. Am I doing something wrong here?

I think some people just have a higher tolerance than others. Personally Bioshock had its moments, but i find with most games, that once you get into the swing of things, the scares become easier to manage.

As for F.E.A.R, yeah I pooped myself a few times. Generally a creepy/eerie game. I suppose people that find J Horrors creepy like this one.

I agree with the silent hill series, hehe, 1 and 2 are very good :)

AvP out of the list mentioned was probably the scariest. System Shock 2 I found more atmospheric than scarey.

I think Aliens: Colonial Marines will be overly scare the hell out of you scarey!

Doesn't stop me playing them though - it only stops me at night whilst I'm in on my own and it's dark outside.... yes I am a wuss.

I didn't find Bioshock scary at all. A little tense in places, but not at all scary.

But I have thought about this before, and put it down to two things.

1. I played F.E.A.R. and it scared the life out of me. Nothing since has scared me to that degree - but I haven't bought Dead Space yet!

2. The Splicers in Bioshock have a somewhat cartoonish appearance. Sure they are deformed and covered in blood and wierd accessories, but their 1950's clothing and so on make them a little less scary. Plus the stuff they randomly say is really quite funny at times.

Utterly brilliant game though. Blew me away. And with reference to the 'it was too easy' comments, if memory serves me correctly, you could change the difficulty level at ANY time by simply changing the setting in options, and gameplay would change accordingly.

Indeed it did, but the problem was i had pillaged the game in normal mode and got all of the powerups which even made hard a doddle. What i need to do one day is start from scratch in hard, that way i'll have to spend more money on ammo etc and so not end up with massive reserves of ammo and items like i have now.
