Does getting fillings hurt?

Got dentist on tuesday, and i need to have about 3-4 fillings at on my teeth at the back, they are only small ones but some people have told me it really hurts and some people have told me you hardly feel a thing.



PS: This isnt ment to be a medical thread, im not asking for advice or anything, just a question (before a mod locks it).
 
Depends on your dentist I guess. When I was younger I had fillings that really hurt.

I had a really deep one done a few years back and I didn't feel a thing. Although because it was a deep one it really ached for about 2 weeks afterwards.

small ones I doubt you'd notice, but I'd stock up on some painkillers for afterwards just incase.
 
I found the worst bit was the initial injection, but then that only hurt when it was at the front, right under my nose. Even that didn't really hurt. The actual filling process shouldn't hurt at all, if it does just ask for more anestetic.
 
Depends if they unleash the DRILL.

no it doesnt.

the only thing that could hurt is the injection beforehand but if your dentist is any good that wont hurt either.

my dentist has those glasses with screens in so you can watch DVDs while he works on your teeth.

The injections don't bother me either, just in that specific position, it gets me. My dentist is really rough, it hurt like hell when she cleaned my teeth last time, but when she did the filling it didn't hurt.
 
The needle can be described as an 'ache' when they insert it, also I have sensitive teeth so that can be a bit uncomfortable

It's afterwards thats the *******, I had 3 fillings the other week, my whole mouth was numb from about 9am until 4pm, I tried eating and just slopped it everywhere. You also look like a complete idiot.
 
Are the teeth in the top of the mouth or the bottom? If it's the bottom you're ok, they inject into your gum and all you'll feel is a tiny scratch. If it's in the top then you're screwed, they'll inject the roof of your mouth which is absolute agony - think of that scene in Marathon Man.
 
As others have said, it depends on the dentist.

The dentist I used to see until about 8 years ago was pretty bad in terms of how much it hurt.
The dentist I go to now is much better (although i've only had one filling since seeing him).

The amusing thing to my mind is that the first dentist is now fully private in a large, modern surgery, the second (better one) is NHS and only has a small fairly basic setup.
 
Well my dentist doesnt even bother with the injections unless its a really deep filing. Even that doesnt really hurt its more psychological, your brain telling you it should hurt i find. Athough i didn't much like it when i went for my first check up there and he started drilling holes in my mouth without telling me what he was up to.

thanks lol, there in the top i think.

Ive had an injection in the top before and it didnt hurt, but i dont think it was in the root of my mouth, only the gum.
 
Just make sure the injection has kicked in before they start working. When I had my filling the dentist didn't wait and proceeded to start drilling into the nerve before my mouth was numb - it hurt, a lot (think waves of pain running throughout your whole body ;)). When my wisdom teeth came through it pushed that tooth out, so I now have no fillings again but all the pain was for nothing :D.
 
If they are shallow fillings, then don't even have an injection as that hurts more than the filling. If it is deep (i.e. down to the nerve), then have the injection.
