Does something need to be done about dogs?

Seen a tiktok where on cctv small toddler was playing on porchway, with father close by working on his car, then a dog approached aggressive, luckily father put himself in between, it went on for about two minutes, the dog just wanted to get at the girl.

Freak. A dog that hurts a human should be put down immediately.

I think people should be allowed any breed, but if it causes serious injury or death the owner should get mandatory min 20 years in prison, rising with negligence.

And this particular issue is coming from a personal place. Anyone defending, excusing or downplaying a dog attack should have a first hand experience seeing the immediate horrific damage that can be done in seconds.
No animal that behaves according to its nature should be punished for the failings and shortcomings of humans.
I've seen some utterly hideous things, but it's always always been the fault of a human. Destroying an animal does absolutely nothing to address that issue.

How can a person not provide companionship or independence to someone who is blind, please explain
I don't need to explain - I'm simply passing on what blind people with guide dogs, and guide dog trainers have told me. In my line of work I meet them regularly.

But think about it...compare the independence of having a person do a bunch of jobs for you, to doing them yourself (with the aid of a dog) and the friendship of a dog that is with you pretty much 24/7, to the 3 or 4 people (if not more) you'd need for round-the-clock care.

I'm not saying a human doesn't provide those benefits, but they're different and from what I've learnt, many would rather have the dog!

And too many inexperienced owners bought puppies over the pandemic.

This really. See some right aggressive dogs on our walk. Most are fine. 95pc I'd say. You get grumpy little dogs quite commonly. But every now and again you'll come across a real nasty sounding and acting strong one.

Often owner walks quite far away from us, looks a little embrassed that thier dog is totally aggressive and quite often apologise as walking past.

Some may have been adopted that are broken, but im sure some have just not been brought up well. Same as ferrel kids you get.

Yes, that too.

Bear in mind that the usual puppy training centres were closed - which is the first thing most responsible owners (even new ones) would go to.
Sadly, IME people go to training activities, realise it's hard work and then stop..

Our Spaniel passed his Gold (laughably simply syllabus) for the Kennel Clubs Good Citizen Dog Training scheme.. we know a few people who got dogs over the last 2-3 years, we've recommended that and other local training activites to them to ensure they have the basics nailed, all tried and gave up, all have dogs that are a little unruly..

People can't even be bothered to feed their kids breakfast and get them to school, so those types ain't going to be taking the pseudo pit-bull they bought off some scroat on a council estate to puppy training, it's probably tied up all day in the back yard, at best, once the novelty has worn off.

A former policeman on radio 2 earlier was talking about his experiences when previously involved in these kind of situations. He described these people as ignorant and lazy, many single parent households with slightly unruly kids and adding the dog just adds more crazy to an already crazy household. Maybe a bit of a generalisation but probably not that wide of the mark.

Don't talk about my neighbours like that

:D

Someone local to us must have recently got a dog, but they permanently leave it outside. Everytime I take ours outside for a wee you can hear it barking, probably trying to get back indoors. Can't quite pinpoint where it's coming from as I'd give the rspca a call.

Same thing with a problem family on an estate, criminality in general, the scumbag kids at schools that disrupt every lesson and every teacher wishes they'd just expel.

The difference is though that these are just dogs and we probably could be more proactive, there are protections against evictions, locking people up or expelling them etc.. so even though everyone knows that if certain kids were kicked out of a class or school it would improve things for the rest or if certain families were removed from an estate or building or certain local trouble makers were simply incarcerated then you'd solve a lot of problems we can't do that as there need to be checks and balances against that sort of thing.

With dogs on the other hand there should be literally nothing wrong with just outright banning some types (make it a broad bull terrier ban) and licensing the rest, have people lose their license if they demonstrate they can't look after a dog etc..

I would be happy with a ban on the Bully XL types as they are bred from American Pit Bulls, how they were even allowed here in the first place boggles the mind, freakish looking things. Staffies on the other hand, every one I have met has been the soppiest dog you could meet.

I wouldn't have a problem with needing licences just not sure how it would be operated and policed tbh.
Maybe there should be a license required to have children too.

Imagine if having kids wasnt a mechanic of biology. And you had to buy one.

It would be the most heavily licenced thing you could get. Just look at the difficulties parents go to to adopt. Yet any scrote with 2 brain cells can get someone/get themselves pregnant and ruin a life.

So yeah, I wouldn't be against a licence either.

My view is dogs shouldn’t be allowed off the leash in public places.

Regardless of how well trained a dog might be, all it takes is for it to see something that sets it off, whether it be curiosity, anxiety etc and it’ll be hard to call it back.

I’ve had many a time dogs off leash aggressively approach my dog on a leash, and they ignore the owners commands.
