Does this sound right (xfx rma)

Don't let them offer your anything less than a GTX275. Remember that you purchased a GTX280. I'd be asking for all my money back TBH, although having read this thread that seems very unlikely. A full credit note is the least I'd accept.

Concerning psu spikes, id have thought that if this was the case, my other cards would have been affected as well?

Could be a fault with one of your 12v rails on your PSU and under heavy(ish) load it could be spiking.

Seems strange that your 280 went and then a supposed "new" 275 went just hours after you started using it. What had you done? Tested its power out on Crysis or anything that could load it up? Could just be bad luck!

I'm loving all the "SCANdalous" "where I buy performance kit." "SCAM" stuff guys. Keep it up :p

I can't belive the 275 has gone already mate that is stupidly bad luck. All the best with getting this sorted once and for all pal.

with mine, the psu was only just in spec, and cheap, I had forgotten that my proper psu had gone and id been running it as a temp replacement since it was only powering a 6600gt. It was suggested to me that it could be the problem after i gave up getting rma's and went for a refund. Then bought a second hand one that had been working for around a year, and could run crysis without killing itself, then within 20 minutes in my machine it did the same as the previous 3 cards.

It is possible that a rail has developed a fault, I could see on asus probe a singular nice and high dot on the rail in its history when it occured, and not quite so high, but completely out of the ordinary spikes happening under lesser loads. For me, it was just w/e crysis did happened to be what caused it to spike enough to damage that output on the card, GPU was still fine, just used the other output and bought a new PSU :).

Could get the monies and buy a 4870 or w/e and try it with the new psu you have offered on, or your one from your spare. Without buying proper testing equipment I dont know how to test for a dodgy one beyond breaking equipment with it :(

Ran into a similiar problem with a bad batch of Sammy F1 1TB disks. Bought 4 and 3 had issues. All happened within a month. Initially they refused to deal with me direct and it got pretty nasty with the returns dept. I then tried their forums and got it sorted within minutes, completely different attitude. Have you tried this?

@ch3mical, the strange hing is though, the replacement card died about 10 seconds after booting into windows, i went to check my email then the artifacts appeared, surely desktop display wouldnt place any strain on the card/psu, the psu is certainly well within spec, 750w thermatake tough power, basically the same psu as a corsair tx 750w.

@The Asgard, been on there forums as well, initially they blanked me, think they got a bit peeved with other users having a look and posting negative comments about them. Soon after this they offered me the replacement.

yea yours is plenty more than enough, and windows shouldn't strain it etc. Just wanted to clarify how mine happened "just in case" sort of thing. Since it kinda made me want to cry when the 4th card died, while I was at a LAN :(

Still, meant i could go and see crytek and go "oi, your game broke my card x 4" to which they really weren't very sympathetic (eg they didnt give me a new awesome crysis eating pc) but since XFX had representatives on site I could talk to their tech guys directly :)

Got my psu tested, got a mate who's an electronics engineer and pc afficiendo, he says that my current psu is top notch, he tested every connector with a multimetre, confirmed that the psu is fine, he was that impressed with it, hes thinking of buying it off me, im changing to a corsair hx 850w modular unit next week.

Was it under full load when he tested it because that's when they tend to fail (or explode). Seasonic, unless I'm mistaken, are the only dedicated psu manufacturer still and pretty much are the best you can buy. Although they make you pay for it. Crosair actually contract Seasonic to build their hx series psus because they're so good, but the warranty isn't quite as good and the rma centre is in the Netherlands, as opposed to Seaonics UK one (a plus when you have to mail a metal brick).

http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/psus/2009/09/14/600w-850w-psu-round-up/1 this explains the issues with psus quite well. If you have that issue then the 8800gt which draws less power would indeed be fine while the 280 will fold, or it's equally possible it simply can't supply enough watts.

My psu was tested on an sli 275 gtx setup running furmark extreme burn, crysis at 1920x1200 by a friend, he reckons that power spikes are highly unlikely, ive just been unlucky with the replacement card, mate told me, if the psu was at fault, my other cards would have been killed as well.

xfx seem to have been very little help.
cant say im surprised though as ive only ever owned 1 xfx card which stopped working and they simply refused to reply to any emails i sent them.

but think of it this way even though you may have lost out atleast you have exposed the scammers for the scum they really are and probably saved a lot of us money and cost the scammers money in lost sales.

i know its only a small consolation but its better than nothing and thanks for keeping us all updated...what a horrible time they have put you through the scum.

All i can hope for is another card that works, i just hope that this thread can be useful to someone else who may find themseves in a similair situation.

Agreed !

Lousy situation to find yourself in :( Just hope it sorts itself out in a reasonable manner/time.

i just hope that this thread can be useful to someone else who may find themseves in a similair situation.

Am lucky that I've never bought from scam - Given your thread Def. no intention of doing so now!!

could it be your mobo not being abel to supply full power? have ou tried a working power hungry card and another PSU on your mobo? possible dust or junk in the pcie slot?

I bought my MB from "SCA*", and i bent few pins on my cpu socket, i RMA'd it on Tuesday on got it back on Friday, they sent me new mobo with all cables and etc, and it was happening week before christmas. TBH i was surprised with their service!
Maybe now it's different story with their RMA....

Crickey, this thread came back to life like a drunk jesus, though still no new card, ive rung them more times than i can count, on the one occasion i got through, they told me my gtx 275 (borked replacement card) was being sent off to be tested, that was last wednesday, rung them every day since, no answer on the phone, ive spent so much on postage rma'ing cards and phone calls, i could afford a fermi or 5870, still rocking my old second hand 8800gt theese days
