Does your post count matter to you?

It annoys me when people assume authority comes with a high post count, or favour the opinions of those who've posted more on the forum that others.

Indeed, I have noticed on a lot of forums that some people do however get special treatment depending on their post count. However on here it seems to make absolutely no difference, which is good :)

It doesn't mean anything much to me, at one point it might have but I've given away ~20,000 posts in post count auctions so it isn't that important. Some of the most helpful/witty/incisive posts I've seen are from members with <100 posts and the most useless from people with >1,000 so I can't see any correlation between post count and quality.

Unfortunately this is rife and goes back to the issue we had the other day where people tend to follow the leaders in regards to their attitude on the forums. As in any social group, the ones who 'shout the loudest' tend to be the leaders and attract the attention.

They should remove the "Post count" and replace it with "Post quaility". The OP could rate each of the responses that he recieves, and from there we could determine who are the most helpful, and who are just spammers.

Come on, you have to admit thats a good idea no? ^^ :D

Dono how many I have gave 90% of them away for the auction thing. So no it dont really bother me as long as I dont lose my MM access, not that iv used in it years, just nice to have.

I think it would probably involve a forum hack though and as such will simply not be implemented, it is also extremely subjective - the OP might not be able to accurately evaluate the quality of responses they receive anyway. If the OP knew enough to accurately rate the responses then they probably wouldn't have to ask the question to begin with.

I actually have 42k posts on top of the 9k I have now. I had them reset just for a laugh at the start of last year I think - I then spent about 6 months away from here. It's easy to clock 'em up as a moderator.

So do I think my 51k+ posts mean anything more than anything else? Nope. Though for new users it's useful to see who the common contributors are - bear in a mind though that a lot of people are readers rather than writers.

A post count should only be important to a postman/woman, or someone who erects posts. My personal count matters not one whit. What is important is not to post for sake of it or to increase your count. All these simple "+1" posts are simply to increase count and adds nothing to the thread.

Woo Hoo 1310 posts.

There should be a "thanks" option like other forums have. This will stop meaningless posts and also show valued members. Also it should be mandatory for people to attach a link to their desktop image on the desktop thread, half that thread is "link please".

EDIT - Also should be a negative post option. E.g. someone starts a thread about cats eating a bird...

Nope.

I think post counts should be hidden until you view the profile. Hopefully that will encourage people to post less spam (e.g. posts like "This thread fails", "orly?", etc), because they're trying to get their post count up.

dont think it means anything and would be better hidden, though when people get to like 100k, you could start thinking maybe they should get out a little more ;)

whatever floats your boat though
