Doing Pressups ?

How do i improve the number of press ups i can do in a single set atm im really struggling to do 20 in a single set without stopping or going weak in the middle body.Ive been doing at least 4 sets of 15 everyday for months to try and improve the max count but for some reason doesn't make any improvement any suggestions ?
 
what are you trying to achieve? why are you doing it?

have a look at 100 pressups. there are a few routines that help you build up to it.
 
I've gone from maxing out at 10 to 40-50 ish in a single set in the last 6 months.

Things I've done:
- lost weight (nearly 3 stone)
- regularly do pressups to failure
- regular attempts to beat personal best on most pressups in 2 minutes
- Other chest and tricep excercises (for example benchpress - aiming to keep between 6-10 reps max while increasing weight lifted every so often)
- Eat lots of protein
- Rest well on days I don't train
- Generally improved all-round fitness especially cardio.
 
I think (from personal experience) what you need to do for this is to maybe just do 2 sets a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, whatever suits you. Start of doing 20 for each set the first day, second day do 21, third day do 22, fourth day do 23. One more press up is manageable. Keep pushing yourself further.

One website I read said something along the lines of "if you keep doing the same amount every day your body will become accustomed to it and just be able to do that amount, only when you push yourself further will improvements come"

Obviously this is just my experience, what works for you might be different.
 
Also try doing different kinds of pressups. Marine press ups, claps, pushes, wider arms etc. They will be a lot harder, and you will do less. But they will help out a lot.
 
Uriel pretty much hit the nail on the head. There isn't much to add to his post. Follow that and you should improve.

Its nowhere near detailed enough to follow.

"eat lots of protein" - why?
"regularly do pressups to failure" - again why? Look at the 100 pressups stuff, it doesnt make you go to failure often and is followed by lots of people who progress very well on it
 
If you're struggling to keep your torso in line, then consider doing some core strength exercises. There are various balances you can do for this ("plank", balancing on right arm and leg keeping your other leg outstretched, etc). It hurts a LOT though!

my dad who is 82, started pressups everyday and just added one more press up every month

took a while as you can imagine, but now he does 100 press ups every day
 
Yes which is why I posted it works :p. My pushups have increased dramatically. But the fact that I'm doing BMF 4 times a week as well probably helps..

Damn it if the system works then it must be my own feebleness that let me down. I'll have to give it another go!

edit: And congrats on doing it, it's quite an achievement :)

Wasn't intended as detailed instructions just a very brief summary of stuff I've done. Press-up numbers are a consequence of my overall fitness improvement and not 'the point'.

Can't see any evidence that the OP needed to lose weight, for example.

I know fella, nothing wrong with your post, it was more the implication, from someone else, that it should be followed as it is :)
 
well, its a chest based exercise, so you will be working (main groups): chest / tris / shoulders

its kinda the equivalent to a bench press.
 
What do you gain by doing press ups?

Does it improve your chest or arms mainly?

Sorry for sounding ignorant.

for the most part you gain the ability to do lots of press ups and thats about it, it'l have an effect on overall chest and tricep strength but not to any massive muscle building ends. Unless you start adding extra weight
