It happens on both sides and its because at least for some of them they have a fragile ego so they are unable to admit to being wrong and cannot tolerate the notion they made a mistake or are even capable of mistakes. They have such a weak emotional strength and weak courage they have to distort their perception of reality to protect their ego instead of admitting valid criticism on themselves or their chosen leader.

Its not obvious if you remove your bias and look at him objectively. Being a good orator is one of the top skills a good president needs. They are meant to stand up live on TV and represent the nation, reassure the natation at times of crisis something which Trump has massively failed at due to his very poor orator skills. When behind closed doors they need good orator skills for negations and meetings. A president gives many speeches so should be good at it. Trump makes the US look weak and look like a joke to the rest of the world.
