DON'T BUY MSI THEY MIS-SOLD TOP SPEC GT SERIES LAPTOPS with MXM Graphics

Good news yesterday. After sticking to my guns and stating I would proceed with the matter via the small claims court, the retailer has sent a rocket up the backside of MSI and I received an email confirming they will be taking this laptop for return, they already arranged an RMA along with a full refund for the original sale price.
Very happy about this as you can imagine, just shows that patience and sticking to your rights works. Looking forward to buying A NON MSI BRANDED COMPUTER which does what it says on the tin!!

Good look anyone else, remember. In UK and you have 6 years to return that GT72 (or GT80) to the retailer, not MSI from the date of sale. If you do it you WILL get a refund in full.

Add GT80 :D

  • MSI advertised the GT72 and GT80 as having upgradable GPU's.
  • MSI then said the GPU's were not upgradable.
  • MSI introduced a 'trade in, upgrade scheme'.
  • MSI advised cost would be comparable to previous MXM upgrades.
  • Costs were based upon how MSI valued your machine, nothing to do with previous MXM pricing.
  • MSI charged people extra to keep their existing features (MUX and RAID).
  • People have successfully upgraded GT72's to the latest Pascal GPU's (MSI claimed this was not possible).
  • Anyone affected has six years to charge back to the retailer for a full refund, as MSI UK Notebook has claimed the scheme is now closed for upgrading.
  • In effect MSI lied, then tried to lie their way out of that lie to save the amount it would cost them fixing their screw up.
  • MSI UK Notebook has 2 reps on this forum @Loki and @natarie both seem to be ignoring this thread in the hope that it will go away.
  • MSI has a legal obligation to make customers aware of the lack of upgrade and offer a solution, so far they have only posted on their facebook page.

I hope one of the reps comes along and offers MSI UK Notebook's perspective...

Any questions, just ask.

So I posted the following on a review on kitguru after a post of a video of MSI's facilities:

It's a shame they didn't let you visit the marketing department. When they mis-sold 1,000's of their premium GT72 and GT80 laptops. MSI blatantly lied to customers that spent their hard earned cash with them. MSI is currently dealing with a class action lawsuit in regards to this. If you are affected by the mis-selling, have a GT72/GT80 and want a full refund, or just want to learn more, there are active threads on notebookreview and the overclockers uk forums. Or simply google MSI MIS-SOLD GT72 and GT80.
.

It was on the site for 2 days before either kitguru caved in to MSI's request or they took it down intentionally.

So is kitguru in cahoots with MSI trying to stop those affected getting redress?

Update: Email from Zardon@Kitguru;

Hi MiSJAH, that wouldn’t (or shouldnt) have been deleted by us, its an open forum to say whatever you want.

I am sure matthew will look into it, and find out. I see no problem with that being posted in the comments, so in the meantime, while we look into it. please feel free to post again.
.

Interesting......... will update.....

If they have such a thing their legal department might tell them to take down anything like that regardless - I know at work its a policy to simply remove anything like that on product reviews, etc. due to the potential legal ramifications (and its just not worth having someone follow up each instance to see if its based on fact or not).

I have scrolled back through the filtered spam comments and found that your comment was actually flagged by another Disqus user. We are unsure who this user actually is as their account is fresh from the 21st of June and doesn't have any other comment history on our site. It seems the Disqus system then automatically marked your comment as spam, as it has no moderation history from us.

I hope that clears things up. I must admit, it is a bit of an unusual situation, as we have to deal with genuine spam comments on a regular basis and they are rarely automatically removed. I will have your comment restored for you as a show of good faith.

Kitguru guys are cool.

In other news I've seen NotebookCheck have recently published a review on the new GT83VR - 2 x 1080's in SLI but only features a 18" 1080p screen... what a waste!

Liam.

Hey. I own a GT72 2QE and was similarly outraged when the 10 series came out and MSI said they could not be upgraded.

I ended up buying a 1070 on eBay from someone who took it out of their GT80VR. With a small mod to the heat sink (shave a bump off with hack saw blade) it fits great and is working fine. Had it for 7 months now and working great. 4K max graphics on all games.

I just thought I would write this for anyone that thinks a 1060, 1070 or 1080 would not work in your machine. It will. MSI lied about that too.

What a damned gut-punch.

I found this seeking my systems to "upgrade it to prevent it from becoming obsolete"... I guess there won't be any such upgrade honored?

Invested about $3,000 into this system for the system, shipping, and replacing of failing components (SSD died within 6 months of purchase of unit. This thing has 'literally' eaten AC chargers... Yes. ChargerS. TWO! (over a span of two years), what do I get to look forward to?

A brick.

Awesome.

I mean, hell. Not to mention I never received a peep, or any kind of hint that MSI was doing an upgrade offer., much-less one that was time-sensitive? Absolutely. Nothing.

Thanks, MSI. Thanks a lot. Reeeeeeeeeeeally appreciate it.

@Jbros1988 if you are in the USA the program to upgrade is still open.

The MSI UK Notebook team ( @Loki and @natarie ) closed the UK sc(am)heme back in December '16.

I have a contact at MSI USA if you want it?

I've been following threads like this since the release of the 10 series cards in the hope i could upgrade. I went through the UK's trade in scheme and had a good laugh at the "offers" they provided. I was happy enough with the laptop at the time as i don't use it all that often. It's been a couple of months since i checked for an update on whether or not someone had done the upgrade, and i found that it was possible to fit a 1060/70 albeit a bit janky and expensive.

I decided to test the waters with my retailer (HIDEvolution) who are a UK MSI dealer i believe. I sent them a message through Amazon last night explaining that i was not at all happy about teh lack of upgrade options, and that i should be covered under the Sales of Goods Act 1979 (purchased Aug, 2015). They have sent back this reponse this morning;

"Hello Kris. While I understand your disappointment, we would not be able to accept a return for a refund at this point, nearly 2 years after you purchased. If you did not come to an agreement with MSI UK, we can try to facilitate a trade in through MSI USA. Please let me if you would like our help.

Thank you"

Do i keep pressing the fact that i should be covered under the above law? I don't want to come across as rude etc. Any help given would be great.

I think HID are a USA based company, check if they have an EU base. If they do not, then endeavour to go through the MSI USA scheme.

If they do have an EU base quote the appropriate EU law, and advise you will start proceedings if they do not follow the law. Donald@HID is normally a good point of contact.

Also, the absolute maximum you should pay to upgrade from a GT72 2QE to GT73VR 7RF is £365 (or dollar equivalent).

I would keep pressing, if you can prove the item was miss sold then I am pretty sure that have met the requirements under SOGA to win in a small claims court. (Also in my experience most companies will not contest a small claims court claim as the costs outweigh the losses of accepting the return usually the threat of it or the initial serving of papers is enough to get the issue closed.) (assuming they are a british company)

Interesting. Looking at the their profile the business address is based in California, but they have a customer service address here in the UK. I bought the laptop through Amazon, so i'm guessing that there is nothing helpful about that either seeing as they are an American company also? Bit disappointed that ordering through a UK site still means i wouldn't be covered.

What exactly is MSI's USA scheme? Is it another trade in program? Because if that is the case i doubt i would be interested in giving them more money.

I have emailed HID just now telling them i am unhappy and that i contacted them last year about the same problem while the unit was still under warranty. I think i would be happy to pay the £365 for the upgrade to be honest, this is more in line with how much i was expecting the upgrade kits to be should they have been released. I will wait back to hear what they say. HID's customer service has generally been ok, even if they do only palm me off, at least they reply. Thank you for the advice.

I would drop an email to amazon also. Advising you were mis-sold by one of their suppliers. Cc HID into the email. Amazon uk is based here.

Thanks, will do...

Don't suppose anyone knows the email address for Amazon UK Customer Services? When i go through my account i can't any option relevant to my problem, and google does give a phone number but i'd prefer to keep everything in writing.

Not sure if this helps anyone else that finds this and is the same boat as me buying through an Amazon retailer, but your 'Legal Warranty' should cover the laptop. Taken from Amazon;

If a product you’ve purchased on Amazon Marketplace turns out to be faulty after delivery or not as advertised (i.e., non-conformant), the Seller has to give you a free of charge (including return costs) repair, replacement or refund for a “reasonable time” following the sale. That time will vary depending on the product and its value. However, if you make such a claim more than 6 months from delivery, you may need to prove that the fault existed at the time of delivery of the product and wasn’t caused by, for example, an accident, misuse, liquid damage, etc.

In addition, many Marketplace Sellers or manufacturers of the products sold offer their own commercial warranty that may also promise to repair the product purchased for a period of time. These may be free or for optional purchase.

So as the item was not as advertised, and was there at the time of manufacturing/dispatch/before i received it, i should be covered for replacement or refund. I have not heard back from HID yet, and i cannot for life of me find any contact info directly to Amazon. My alternative is to try and open a return through amazon with the "Description on website was not accurate" reason and see who ends up dealing with it. I get a feeling it will be HID though and they will most likely just try fobbing me off again. Advice?
