DON'T BUY MSI THEY MIS-SOLD TOP SPEC GT SERIES LAPTOPS with MXM Graphics

Wow this is still going? They will continue to lose sales on more than just notebook sales from these kind of practices. Just last night a buddy was building a ryzen machine and picked an MSI gfx card and motherboard, when he passed it to me I changed them for gigabyte before sending it back.

He asked me why so in return I asked him if he actually wanted it to work or not? In my experience they produce expensive low quality crap which never lasts.... I have more broken MSI kit than any other manufacturer and just the other day my factory overclocked 280x gaming which has been replaced more times than I can remember under RMA decided to give up the ghost, yet again, in the same way its given up several times before (artifacts all over the screen) . I would RMA it but ill get more broken crap back in return and it will cost me in the process, I am starting to wonder if there are MSI 280X cards out there that actually meet their factory OC.

MSI in my eyes have been producing for a long time now, poor quality, expensive, badly designed products that fail. I said it earlier on in the thread and ill say it again. AVOID!

The most ironic things is people such as MSI, pay huge salaries to internal risk assessors whose job it is to consider situations like this, as in a product line failing for whatever reason. They work with the insurance companies and decide what the company will pay per year for being insured against the risk and then claim a huge sum upon it becoming a reality.
In other words, they already got paid out for this issue, they were protected.
Now, why would they choose to fudge and mess around on the issue in that case? I believe it is because they know their premium will increase the following year, as such avoid as many repairs, refunds and replacements as possible on top of the payout to cover the increase in the future.

Corporate thinking, greedy and non user friendly.

Oh I forgot to mention something about the ticket. After I responded to their reply they chose to not respond back and closed out the ticket. Their own company policy states support tickets will be closed out only after 7 days if there is no response to their reply. They sent a reply at 11:20am UK time, I responded with a reply at 11:30am, they didn't reply and the ticket was closed at 11:33am. So they don't even want to follow their own policies when the going gets touch for them, let alone passed laws and legislation by elected governments.

Personally, I believe because I mentioned the sales of goods act, I reckon they know I will be proceeding via the retailer and in turn will invoke whichever act covers the retailer and manufacturer. They do not have a choice but to refund the retailer after myself, if they did then the 2 sales acts would be in conflict, which they are not. If one is actioned, the consumer act, then the other is actioned because of that fact.

I am waiting to hear what the retailer says, they agree at least and have said they would not be happy either. I guess they need to check out their own position first though of course so I am waiting to hear from them before I proceed further.

I already opened a case which is waiting on the retailers response with the consumer ombudsman who passed that to trading standards along with all the communication with MSI, their advertising etc and if the retailer doesn't refund straight away, they will certainly get involved.

MSI in my opinion used to build some quality laptops a few years ago such as the GS70 line up, my old one that I purchased back in 2014 served me well and never failed in the near two years that I owned it. The build quality was excellent and you could tell that they used premium parts inside and out, and despite it being a 17" platform the battery life on it was superb during light use. The screen it featured at the time was probably the best I had used up until that point as well despite it being TN, very bright for what it was and the colours were very vibrant. In my opinion it was probably the best slim 17" laptop in it's class at the time and nothing else came close. Gaming on it was exceptional as well, as was the cooling. Most definitely the best £1299 I spent back then on a quality laptop. It's the one laptop I always regretted selling on (Had the itch to upgrade) and I even went back to owning a second hand one for a short while in between settling on a newer laptop.

Fast forward to last year and I delved into briefly owning a newly refreshed GS60 for a short time before sending it back. Abysmal battery life for what it was and the screen was absolutely terrible, this time being an IPS screen I really expected better - mediocre brightness, light bleed, washed out colours and horrible panel stripping in between pixels. Turns out MSI cut corners in this department and used low quality / cheap panels. I was also really disappointed that these featured a slow 128GB SSD taking into account it's price tag and the laptop always ran hot as well despite what it was used for.

One final straw with giving MSI a final go was earlier on this year by trying out the GS63VR refresh (Originally went for the GS73 but felt too big for my liking). Sadly the GS63VR was also disappointing, again always ran hot and loud despite what you did on it and the IPS screen was probably the worst I have ever experienced on a laptop - in fact I'm adamant that it could have been the same spec'd one as featured on the older GS60. Absolutely unacceptable for a premium gaming laptop with a £1700+ price tag.

It's simply shocking with reading the posts in this thread about this whole debacle with MSI, they really need to up their game now more than ever after not only this whole ordeal, but with their entire line up of laptops in general.

Liam.

I am certainly boycotting MSI products now, and will not be recommending them to family or friends. There are other good manufacturers around that provide better service.

I urge everyone to link to this thread on the others forums you use and basically publicise the hell out of this debaucle.

In the UK, no idea about elsewhere, you are covered by either the Sales of Goods act 1979 (amended) or the Consumer act 2015. I bought in July 2015, I am covered by the earlier act. Under the following 'Accepting Returns and giving replacements' THE LAW, located on the official UK government website here:

https://www.gov.uk/accepting-returns-and-giving-refunds

And scrolling down to the section headed 'Repairs and Replacements', it can clearly be seen exactly what the rules are.

My laptop has been proven to be defective and has been both mis advertised and in turn mis-sold. There is no disputing this fact. Additionally the retailer has acknowledged this to be the case and then confirmed that this has resulted in mis advertising.

Despite being presented from the horses mouth with the fact that by law, they have no choice but to deal with it, they refuse. They have sent me another email and attempted firstly to say it means you can upgrade within the same series. Not possible given the 980M is the last card in the series. Attempted to say that the reference in the ad to being upgradable to future generations, does not infact mean what I think. Apparently 'generation' is not series 10!!! LOL

Irrespective of this, they already sent me an email admitting the fault and that it caused the mis sale, now they want to attempt to backtrack? I have all the evidence I need to go to small claims now. By not offering a replacement, the fault being genuine, acknowledging then retracting I can get a full refund instead of a replacement.

The retailer btw is ******.com. I feel given their response that it is time people knew who they were and what their attitude appears to be towards following consumer regulations and the law.

I am in no rush, I only started on this after seeking a 10 series M card and discovering what everyone has been ranting about. It will cost me about 200 pounds to go to small claims. Well worth it because I see little risk personally and have followed the rules as set out for a genuine problem and have been let down.

Anyway, lets see what happens

Good luck and keep the community informed. When you are successful it will motivate others to get MSI to do the right thing.

With having a bad experience with Dell gaming laptops I was looking at MSI for a new laptop but now after reading all this I'm just lost.

I must recommend AORUS/Gigabyte.

Since jumping to AORUS because of this ongoing palaver with MSI, I have nothing but praise to heap on this amazing little machine and the UK staff are spot on too.

Their products have always been shoddy quality. I remember buying an MSI Neo2-FR board from the 775 days after it got a good review in PC Pro. Worst laid out board ever. CPU power pin wasn't at the edge of the board like most of those at the time, but right in the middle on the I/O shield side near the heatpipes! Used to annoy the hell out of me when making changes to that PC. The logos and the product/feature naming also smacked of cheap chinese tech. It never looked fully polished and still doesn't today. Probably one of the reasons why I stick with ASUS for a motherboard.

Add to the fact that said board didn't work with a certain PSU as it had a specific power on time that caused issues with certain PSU's (and seems to be an issue with a later gen board I tried too), it's just put me off using them at all. Good on you MiSJah for starting this thread though. Usually these things just get swept under the carpet.

I'd love to buy one of those laptops but they are extremely expensive and I'm a tight bugger, I've been searching all day for laptops and the best deal I got was for 2% off an Alienware from the Dell outlet(the reason I looked at Alienware is they look robust nearly everything else looks flimsy and plastic)

What's your budget and what spec are you after? Let's see if the community can find you a deal.

Minimum 8gb RAM, 2GB+ GPU, i5-i7, USB 3 is a must, it's for work and gaming on Cities Skyline not what I would call proper gaming but still quite taxing. £600 is what I'm looking at spending but credit card is available

Good news yesterday. After sticking to my guns and stating I would proceed with the matter via the small claims court, the retailer has sent a rocket up the backside of MSI and I received an email confirming they will be taking this laptop for return, they already arranged an RMA along with a full refund for the original sale price.
Very happy about this as you can imagine, just shows that patience and sticking to your rights works. Looking forward to buying A NON MSI BRANDED COMPUTER which does what it says on the tin!!

Good look anyone else, remember. In UK and you have 6 years to return that GT72 to the retailer, not MSI from the date of sale. If you do it you WILL get a refund in full.
