Doom 3 - BFG edition

Will do. Let's hope I can get past the AMD / Doom 3 confliction issues as I get corruption upon starting the game - flickering screen etc. Probably needs cat ai to be turned off as it did for D3 mods. :)

I got BFG for the 3D support.... Its seriously awesome. Makes the imps look like claymation or something. Very creepy. Its also much easier to run, as it supports widescreen and whatnot out the box. I can never be arsed sorting out the original for the resolutions and whatnot.

^^ I was only just looking at that video a about half an hour ago. I'm not going to play it for a challenge, so I'll set it to easy difficulty & make my way quickly to the point where the new levels kick in. :)

The new levels are an addon, like a separate campaign. You don't need to play through the main campaign to get to them.

Doom 3 BFG works MUCH better if you have non-standard resolution. I have eyefinity, and BFG just works: just select resolution and go.

I haven't yet figured out how to get Doom 3 running in eyefinity without looking squashed and stretched (the max ratio is seems to support is 16:10), and I know all about tweaking config files.

I also think sikkmod is highly overrated: you have so many settings to tweak, with no idea what each of them do, and that's asusming it runs at all. Maybe I've been unlucky, but I couldn't be bothered with the massive amount of tweaking that would be necessary to get it looking decent (and working!). Some people criticise BFG for being too bright (and there's truth to that) but the videos of user-made quality mods I've seen like Sikkmod look much brighter, with overblown colours.

If anyone knows of a site which gives quick setup tips, good default settings, I'd give it another go, but its a hard sell when BFG just works and does look pretty decent.

Me too, looks great. 2D@120hz is really nice too, just wish people were playing it online, I used to love it.....

will there ever be DOOM 4?

Before Rage game out, they said Doom 4 wouldn't take as much development time because it was building on the same engine, and would be released soon after (say, like the following year).

Then Bethesda announced in 2011 that the working version of doom 4 had been scrapped and they were restarting from scratch: "An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect. As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

It seems the project was plagued with internal difficulties, and had been nicknamed Call of Doom due to following certain other games lead - not a good sign. Then when Rage finished and the Rage and Doom 4 teams merged to work together, they didn't get on and there was a power struggle and mismanagement.

So, who knows when or if it'll ever see the light of day, or if it will even be worthy to bear the name Doom.

Hey,

Slightly off-topic mega bump coming up... apologies!

So despite several attempts I've never played Doom 3 to the end. I just installed it on Steam and, well, it hasn't aged gracefully! What mods would you guys recommend to spruce it up a little? I've heard Sikkmod and Perfectedmod mentioned, but are there any others I should check out?

[edit] Or would you guys suggest playing vanilla the first time through?!

Cheers,

Su

Trent Reznor sound mod, I would definitely recommend this if you can still get hold of it as it dramatically changes some of the sounds (weapons and monsters) which IMO improves the game and overall atmosphere considerably.

No Gibb mod

I have just downloaded this, but getting Couldn't load default.cfg. Can't find a read me file. Any idea what I did wrong, will this work with the steam version

Yes, it does work with the steam version; that's what I used when I ran the mod.

I got it to run by navigating my way to the Doom 3 folder and double clicking the icon for the mod.

Have you installed it ok?

Edit : I think I'm right in saying that the BFG edition isn't as mod friendly (if at all), so the above really only applies if one is playing the original game.
