Doom 3 - BFG edition

haha people will rant and rave but as said the older version doesnt run aswell on newer hardware and is being done so works with the mods :p

also the older version has lots of issues with mods which arnt highlighted

also if you paid 20 quid you were robbed :D

13 quid new. doom 3 retail is like 5-7 quid with roe its close to ten

so 3 quid more for a game that runs better but looks slightly worse for a short while :) mods will work on it soon then its sweet all round

The older version does have subtle but noticeable stretching on widescreen, and try to run it eyefinity - it;s horribly stretched.

I'm tempted by the new version just for eyefinity but haven;t seen any reports of how well it works.

Your girlfriend earns less than minimum wage?!

Three hours at minimum wage is less than the game costs (£20)

Nothing wrong with ranting when its justified, and I have never had any issues running Doom III on any hardware, thats one of the advantages of OpenGL.

£20 is the cost from steam, which is £6 more than it used to cost for Doom III + RoE (which were removed when BFG launched)

Most places have the physical game for £13.99 delivered but that's more than it used to cost for Doom III + RoE. Plus like I said earlier, its an 8 year old game, why would anybody really care about getting it all shiny and new when they could get it off eBay for less than a bacon double cheeseburger meal?

Runs better is subjective, Its not like there were many issues with the old game, but the issue remains that this game costs (on steam) £6 more than the bundle its replaced.

---------

Don't get me wrong I like Doom III, always have, however what Bethesda have basically done is take an 8 year old game, wave a magic wand at it, shout about how they have improved loads of stuff, then release the "new" game for 40% more than the old bundle cost, and it turns out that their "improvements" are nowhere near as good as the community's efforts, in fact their flashlight mod is visually inferior to the community's duct tape mod from back in 2004 and to top it all off the in game textures don't look as good as the old ones did on ultra setting with all the console tricks* and don't even look in the same league as the texture mods the community provided free of charge

*As I also have the original game installed on an old drive I tested them side by side windowed, the textures/AF in BFG are not as sharp.

im probably late with this btu it looks like there will be mod support now, john carmack mentioned that the people who had to give permission to release the BFG's code have done so.

hopefully we will see some decent mods come through in the future for this one! :D

as DG has mentioned, this version is decent value for money and will only get better with the mods now

Picked it up in the Steam Sale and had a play over the weekend. The 3D is very good and the performance is excellent (no surprise there), the laser sight on the pistol really adds to the perception of depth. The 120hz option in 2D with motion blur is really cool too, just wish there were people playing online, I tried several times and no one online at all.

Don't know if they fixed this but my biggest gripe with this was that they changed how the torch worked. You used to have to switch out to a torch, but now guns just have a touch on them :(

I picked this up in the steam sale and am currently playing it, really enjoying it so far in 3D but I cannot select 1920x1080 resolution for some reason, the highest it allows is 1600x900.

Is there a config edit I can do? Cheers guys.

no there was word of mods ages ago but not seen anything. if you want to try wulfens and sikkmodd youll want the original copy of doom 3

Just a heads-up for people thinking abotu buying this.

I personally strongly suggest you don't buy the BFG Edition and get the older ones instead.

It currently has no mod support and the visuals are worse (not joking). If you search around you can find loads of comparisons. The one thing it has going for it though are the new levels but apparently they're nothing special.

^^ I was only just looking at that video a about half an hour ago. I'm not going to play it for a challenge, so I'll set it to easy difficulty & make my way quickly to the point where the new levels kick in. :)

Cool, let me know how you get on and how the new levels compare to the old ones. I have the original DooM 3 on my Steam but my mate has the BFG Edition. If they're any good i'll use his Steam account to have another blast on the new levels, only if it's worth it though. :p
