DOOM benchmark Result Thread.

Doom is an OpenGL game, Not Directx. Plus Vulkan allows the AMD cards to stretch their legs with the lower Overhead and higher draw-calls similar to what we see between DX11 and DX12.

Although as i said in my post, there are many reasons why AMD is behind in OpenGL performance.

Why wouldn't it benefit AMD. Mantle and DX12 are both low level api's and benefit AMD so why wouldn't Vulkan which is based on Mantle. In the op's results at 1080p Nvidia have a lead most likely due to amd's driver overhead. Under Vulkan this should not be a problem if it's coded properly. It's not a 100% that this will be the case but it's likely that AMD will gain some performance in Vulkan like they do in Mantle/dx12. With Amd's history of poor openGl performance Amd might even see a bigger jump in Vulkan compared to Dx11/Dx12
I didn’t say it wouldn’t benefit AMD. I asked why would it even the playing field. Any advantage AMD get so do NVidia. Yes Vulkan was based on Mantle but Vulkan is not Mantle and far different from what Mantel was. I wasn’t aware AMD had poor OpenGL performance in comparisons to NVidia. I thought AMD had decent OpenGL performance so the playing field stays the same when swapping to Vulkan.

No pottsey, AMD's OpenGL performance is not that great, so like with DX12 AMD will see a larger improvement with vulkan compared to Nvidia.

Have you seen Nvidia's performance in DX12? It's pretty obvious why people think Amd will gain and Nvidia won't. With Vulkan being close to mantle it's possible that AMD will gain and Nvidia will stay the same or lose performance as is happening in Dx12.

AMDs OpenGl performance issues are mostly Linux based. There OpenGL windows performance is good.
Rage, Doom and Wolfenstein all played great for me.

Because it doesn't show AMD leading. You must have realised by now that it is his way? I personally don't care for who is winning/losing, so long as the game is playable for me and friends.

Thats not very fair to say that. When the shoe was on the other foot like with the first ashes dx12 results everyone said the results looks wierd and were dismissed at once. Mostly by Nvidia users.

Now we have a game where a 380x, which is basically a 285 on juice annihilating the 290x, which is a 390x with 4gb of memory, and this is fine it's just the silly little amd users crying about losing.

I did said all I cared about was the game running well for myself but I can't let hypocrisy fly.

It was More aimed at the actual poster rather than the figures / meaning of the topic I reckon.

Some people just regurgitate the same old crap.

According to posts there is something wrong with the drivers with the 290X/390X that causes massive slowdowns with shadows in some situations or something.

EDIT: Something on reddit about it https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/4j3t1w/doom_performance_is_doomed/ not really looked into it though.

Supposedly the same issue is causing sli to not do much, but a fix is in the works.

Nothing wrong here. 290 though can't see the X version being any difference.
I just think people are expecting to much, for example @1440p ultra frame rate just isn't worth it. But @1080p it's more than enough.
So on my system it's either 1440p @high or 1080p @ultra.

Nah there is something wrong - some people have been running 980, 380X and 290X through the same bit with the 290X dropping to half the performance of the other 2 in places.

Not sure unless the 290x is doing something different than the stand 290 I have no idea.
But I can safely say on my system performance is right where I expect it.

I'm only going on forum posts but fair few reports of people seeing the 290(X) and 390(X) cards having performance issues when using other AMD and nVidia cards as a comparison.

But Vulkan isn’t close to mantle. What I mean is Vulkan has been changed a large amount so it’s not bias towards AMD and not bias against other GPU brands. Vulkan isn’t just Mantle with a few changes. Mantle is just the baseline that Vulkan was built on. A large amount of work from all the GPU company's went into turning Vulkan into a fair API for all platforms and all GPU types.

For example Mantle was very unfriendly towards Tile based GPU's. Vulkan is very friendly towards Tile based GPU's.

I will be very surprised if Vulkan evens out the playing field between AMD and NVidia at least on Windows. It wouldn't surprise me to see a small variation.

Like I say, so long as it runs well for all, that is all that matters. The game will be Epic (no pun intended...)

I have been saying this for a while now. I am not bothered whether my card is top dog as long as my games don't run like them.....Dogs that is :p

Each Dev should make it their prime directive to get the best out of both cards using all the features of both companies.

End Of. :D

This makes no sense at all. Why would they use Mantle in the first place if it was nothing like what they they envisioned the final product to be. Vulkan will most likely be Mantle with add ins. From my view point there would be no point in using mantle if it was not close to what was needed.

This game uses OpenGL? I'm kinda surprised, I'm used to most things being done in DX11 these days. I'm also a fair bit disappointed at the AMD performance for this game if what people are saying is true. But on the contrary, I'm very skeptical of GTX970 performance... over 100fps average at 1080p? A little over 60fps average at 1440p? Okay maybe it's not so crazy considering MGS5 runs very smoothly at 1440p on a 970.

But then it also puts things into perspective for Vulkan and that GTX 1080 thing. Unless it was running at higher resolutions like 1440p and up, it's not particularly impressive considering the 980ti averages 150fps at 1080p. Maybe Vulkan isn't quite as well optimised as we hope? Or perhaps it's the 1080... could be unoptimal drivers for an unreleased card. Whatever the case, I hope performance is good on Vulkan when they release that feature.
