Really quite surprised by the lack of response on here for this.
This completely missed my radar, after having been a fan and grown up with the original Doom series, and following the positive reviews this has got, I just had to get it.
I'm not disappointed, loving it so far after 4-5 hours into the campaign. I like the simplicity of it, something that is missed in modern games.
I think it has been released at a bad time in terms of audience and coverage. Lets face it, with Uncharted 4 being released in the same week, Doom is not going to get as much attention as it arguably deserves.
I was a critic of the new Doom game based on the gameplay footage they released prior to release. It looked to be too console orientated with gimmicks like glory kills and weapon upgrades and so on and so forth which Doom was never really about.
But having owned every doom game since 1993 I had to buy it. I am really glad I did because it is a great game, particularly with all of the help mechanics turned off, and an increased FOV. This is what FPS shooters on console needed. No hand holding if you don't want it - but it is there to help people who want an easier ride. No silly health mechanics where you magically heal yourself after 5 seconds of standing around. An FOV slider for those who want to make the game feel a bit faster and have a better overall visibility. I hope other devs take these things on board.
I am a total of about 14hrs into the campaign and I am only half way through. That said, I am dying a lot as I am not great on a pad and some sections within levels have taken me an hour or more to complete. I am getting a bit better with the pad though - it is a case of improving or dying!

I am also spending time exploring and trying to find the secrets - but haven't got them all in any level yet - so I am going to have to replay from the start to find them
My one major gripe, though, is the texture popping. It really is pretty shocking on my game and very noticable - to the point where even details on the floor just pop up (like yellow painted lines) and it is kind of spoiling my overall enjoyment of the game. Definitely feels like the PS4 is struggling to keep up with the engine, or perhaps they needed to do some more optimisation work. Of course the other option to consider is my HDD or my PS4 might be on their way out, but it seems to cope with other games OK. I am playing on 110 FOV so I don't know if that is having a bearing.
I am also finding the sound is a bit off in terms of sound positioning, particularly with the zombie like guys who always sound like they are right next to you, even if they are on a floor above or below.
But overall, I am really enjoying this game and I am glad I bought it. I suppose I probably will also get it for my PC at some point for the better graphics and greater number of options (and an easier control method!) but I think the PS4 version is a worthy contender and, all gripes aside, I am thoroughly enjoying the game as a whole.
