doomsday prepper.

Last year we had no power for 8 days in october due to 2.5 feet of snow over night, I didnt believe how crazy it gets, but the petrol stations that have power quickly run out of petrol, the supermarkets get stripped of stuff like water and bread. When its on the news that theres a big Nor'easter coming everyone goes crazy.

I learnt to have food i can cook on a camp stove, torches, batteries and basically just stuff to get by when theres no power or access to the shops for a week at a time.

The farmer guy in the first episode, or second i can't remeber which, had his guns taken off him by the local government. This guy.

I've been watching that too. The only thing I will do from that is have a 'go bag'

Mainly for things like if I see a big spider but then lose sight of it, or maybe a fire. Although, one may lead to the other :p

There was an episode of doomsday preppers where this tool took his sons to the desert for target practise and managed to blow his thumb off as he had his thumb over the barrel of his weapon.

Later on he mentioned to his kids how proud he was of them for not panicking and that he was a tough old man, then his kids reminded him how he kept passing out lol.

Haha.

It would be better to learn to live off the land. Go to your local common land, medow, wood, forrest and see which plants, berries you can eat. Learn to catch kill and prepare rabbits etc..

Learn to make shelter.

These skills are useful not just in the crazy scenarios mentioned here, but say if you're on the run, if you loose everything and are homeless. etc..

Anyone read Emergency by Neil Strauss? Fun read.

We've already had our own little doomsday prep sesh. Didn't bother going to the supermarket for 3 weeks and just lived off what we had.

We didn't die.

Thanks :)

All those that think it is stupid will be sorry if something does happen and me and my family have a glut of food, water and medical supplies and you are having to eat your friends and family and drink your own urine :)

We might be but you'll be sorry 2 weeks later when your own supplies run out. That is if you survive the inevitable onslaught of those who didn't prepare getting desperate enough to kill two weeks before you are. That doesn't seem to have a measurable difference when we're talking about the end of the world anyway. The Americans are right, go big or go home.

That's just so you get an added feature adventure out of whatever crisis it is you are encountering.

That's the more adventurous type ;)

its a scary thought that these kind of people are allowed to own a gun, part 2 has a guy who has 10000 rounds of ammo stored at home plus whatever is in his bunker.

nutter

Americans probably have valid reasons to prepare, if anyone was going to get hit by an earthquake, tornado or bio-weapon it's them.
In the UK the most we can expect is a national strike cutting food and fuel deliveries, possible extended power cuts and maybe a few days of snow. Probably losing my job is a big issue too.

I gear my preps around that, I have a generator and spare fuel, solar panel and an invertor running off a deep cycle battery, paraffin/gas/LED lamps and probably basic food for a month. I don't envisage the water company failing to pump water so stored garden water will suffice. Internet can be dial up, cable or 3G.
I'd like a portable gas heater and a solar water heater, and I intend to make the house more secure, but that's it really.

Its not all about zombies and nuclear war, its just about having things so that your not put out when you've no power for weeks, or your snowed in etc etc.

It would be a pretty boring show if they didnt show the extreme side of prepping though.

We need Kwerk back :)

I watched perhaps three or four episodes from the first season of this series before giving up completely on it. I was quite amused by the American who had so meticulously planned his course of action should his country be targeted by an EMP (Electro Magnetic Pulse - think Revolution) either by nature or enemy forces. He was so well stocked up with provisions / ammunitions / weapons and his cunning plan hinged on driving out of the city!

What really done it for me was the American who decided his kids need to learn to shoot should they need to fend for themselves when the apocalypse comes. Being the safety concious person he was he took his two very young kids out to the middle of no where and demonstrated to them how to fire a gun. Said gun then recoiled and almost ripped one of his fingers off - good job the camera crew had a qualified first aider because he clearly didn't include that in his plans.

The only thing I learned from watching three or four episodes is how ******* stupid, gullible and paranoid Americans really are! Now I'm not about to judge an entire nation on the idiotic antics of a few miss guided individuals but America you're not doing yourselves any favours promoting this kind of **** viewing across the pond!

Bringing the subject back onto topic OP - no, I personally don't practice "prepping". I do believe I have sufficient stored in my property to see us through a few weeks should the worse happen. And if we need to move out and relocate we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
