Scenario:

Parents on holiday in California for 2 weeks. So my sister is at home alone.

This morning I got a phone call from my little sister saying shes broken a door. I assume this was during a party or whatever 16 year olds get up to.

So anyway I've driven down to have a look at it, and the door is totally knackered. Luckily its a door that can be bought from Focus/B&Q etc and relatively common. My problem is hanging it.

I havent a clue, I dont think its something I can do myself and my dad has high standards / eyes like a hawk. Ive promised to sort this out for her so I'm going to get a door on Monday/Tuesday and then arrange for a joiner to come and fit it.

What kind of prices will a joiner charge to hang a door? Also do you think its feasible to have it done before a week today (Next Saturday)?

Comments, laughter and suggestions will be much appreciated.

Humm, Ive got a few friends who are in trades. But I don't really want to involve them. One of them knows my Dad quite well :/

I feel sorry for my sister, because I know my Dad will not be happy. So im being a nice older brother and helping her out.

well in which case its slightly more time consuming.

The difficulty level is the same, you just need to be a little neater in your work.
It literally is just planing the door so it sits snug in the frame, and then matching up where the hinges are to go with a bit of pencil.
Chisel out where the hinges need to go by facing them up on the edge of the door and drawing round them.

The door handle mechanism is the hardest part, but a clever boy like you can work out what needs to be done after looking at it for a few minutes. ;)

Shes too young to sort it out really, Im feeling generous.

I wouldn't bother to help her to sort it out, there are lessons you learn in life and i think this is a minor one for her to learn a big lesson. If you can't do the time, don't do the crime. Cover for her like this will set a patten. Let her face the music, it was her party to start with so let her finish it.

Well im a joiner myself but work in a workshop and i havent done many foreigners. But ive heard that some carpenters charge about 15-20 quid per door plus all the bits like hinges, handles, locks.

atpbx I might buy one and have a look at it on Monday, when im off. Had planned to do other things but never mind.

If I dont think I can do a good job ill get a carpenter. 15/20 quid a door sounds ok. Thanks for that Gav

Raymond Lin, I know what you are saying but I know what my Dads like and she works hard enough to keep him happy. Shes paying, Im just helping her out. Im sure she wont take the biscuit.

Throw one of your mates thats in the trade a score of quid & a bit extra for not to tell your dad.

If you say your dad has eyes like a hawk I'm sure he'll spot it's a new door never mind it being hung slightly different.

Tell your dad? Whats he going to do, beat her up?

No, but he wont pay for her car insurance in a few weeks time when she turns 17.

She works really hard at school, Im proud to have her as a sister. She deserves to be able to drive the car. Just she needs to learn some common sense :p

Fair enough, none of us are in a position to say what your dad is like, i hope you get it sorted. Unfortunately I have no idea how to hang a door, one of my mate would know but your best bet would be a joiner or carpenter.

Aye, but the house is only 10 years old. The doors all look mint anyway.

What kind of door is it? It would be unusual to buy a door of the shelf that would match doors that are 10 year old. If it's a white six panel door or something they generally come with a base coat on them & you'll have to paint it the same as the rest. If it's a stained door maybe the finish will be slightly different etc.. or the laquer may have faded a bit on the original ones.

Just so you know. ;) It might be harder than you think to get one over on old hawk eyes. :D
