does or has anyone worked in double glazing? if so, do you know anything about their pricing structure. a couple of companies have been pestering me for over 12 months now (and i am in the market tbf but i don't wish to commit yet) and their prices have gone from nearly £3.5k (8 windows, same spec) to now just under £2.5k.
when the first salesman came around to my house last year and told me the price of over £3k, i said that was too much, to which he asked how much i thought was a fair price to which i replied ''about £2.5k'' he then started packing up his things and said ''sir, we wouldn't rent them to you for that price'' (not qute sure what he meant by that)
anyway ff 12months+ later and they've come down £1k. i wont be using them as i don't trust anyone who prices in this way but i was wondering if anyone knew just how much profit they make on these windows?

They make the prices up and see what they can get away with. They’re almost as bad as estate agents.

If companies have orders that have been cancelled they would rather fill that time with a lower profit sale than no sale at all. A couple of years ago my parents were offered a similar cheap deal on the on condition that they went ahead immediately as they had no orders due to cancellations and wanted to increase cash flow. It was a good deal and they've had no complaints on the quality of workmanship.

I have to say it does feel like they make up the prices as they go along.

Whan asked how much you thought was a fair price I bet you wish you said £500 now!

Don't quote me on this, but I've heard rumours that if you buy the front windows you get the back ones free.

Sometimes you can just flat out buy one get one free, I said you buy one get one free.

+1

Especially the large companies - they have a lot of overheads to cover, f/t salesmen, advertising, HQ offices etc etc

I would recommend asking around and go with a local small firm if you can find one with a decent rep.

I ended up using a local co who was a father and son team, really nice guys, concientious about their work and cost me 1.2k for a front and back door (with all side panels etc) and 600 for front & back guttering, soffits and downpipes (terraced house)

Which in total was less than my neighbours paid for their guttering and soffits alone from a well known company

They literally will try and charge as much as possible for the commission. Then when they realise they are not going to get that price they just want to make a sale and move on to the next victim.

As above big companies have salesman 50%+ of their quote will be his commision. You will probably get a better, longer guarantee wth a big company bare that in mind. SOME ARE RELENTLESS,

small local "builders" will be cheaper. nothing wrong with them just go by reputation.

i had mine done last year and paid £7.5k. But i had a large window changed into patio doors. That price included 2 doors, pair of patio doors and 8 windows or so.

I didnt shop around as I personnaly know the MD of the company and the products they fitted and service is first class. You get what you pay for.

I like to pay once and never see the fitters etc for anything again. Means they have done there job right first time.

Ask friends and family for recommendations.

We pay circa £135 - 150 per sq m for plastic PVCu windows but that's for fairly high spec new builds, I know a volume builder is paying £80 per window fitted for general housing.

I had a quote for my house @ £9k ended up getting a local guy to do it for £1,300 and they are still there 8 years later all fine and dandy.

My neighbour was quoted 3k which he accepted but then after looking around & getting better quotes he used the 7 day opt out & went with another company, The 3k company rang him & offered to do it for the same 2k as the new firm, My neighbour/mate got the right hump & asked why they hadn't quoted 2k in the first place & to **** off. :p
They are **** takers & quote high so just ring around a few firms & expect a Third off the first price at least. ;)

As mentioned above, the larger and more well known companies seem to pluck figures out of thin air or have a ridiculous profit margin. Try looking for a local small firm or family business for a quote, it should be a lot cheaper.

Like most things in life, you do get what you pay for though as different companies use different types of profile. I'd highly recommend Veka & Rehau, nice quality plastics that'll last you a long time. Also, make sure the company is either FENSA or Certass registered.

Had a french door, three large and three small windows fitted for a few notes under £2,000 last week.

How much does a sheet of glass and a few hours of a ****** time cost?

you mean

1) how much THEY say it will cost? about £500

or

2) how much will they demand with menace after the work is done? about £5000

you will also have to repalce all your valuable items...

I used a local family run company from checker trade and they were great 6 windows 3 large and 3 med/small costing about £1300. If you put your location down people from the world of OCUK might be able to make some recommendations
