Dover Ferry Queues

Looks like loads of people avoiding the airport chaos as well, did due to cancelled flights etc. So took the safe way, which was the ferry, but lots of others had the same idea.

It's not exactly anything new either, last time I went in 2015 it was about 3-4 hours waiting, 2nd day of the summer holidays. We blamed the number of people, as opposed to anything else.

Edit: Seems it was way worse in 2016.

But..... but........ but....(B word I can't say?)

There are a lot of potential causes of this, it is not possible to blame one thing without knowing all the details. Anyone who comes to a quick conclusion is just extolling a view already held.

I'll put money in more chaos tomorrow. Fuel price protestors will be doing a go slow on the motorways and 'Just stop oil' will be blocking petrol stations.

Have a quick look at how big an airport is versus how big a port is...
What airport and what port, also what of earth does the size have to do with anything, did you even read the post you replied to?
Is that supposed to support your argument? Just proves how moving the border to France would be worse.
I didn't make an argument, you said "we would be running into issues where boats were queueing to unload in Calais" and i said "You mean like planes queue up to unload at airports across the world...Oh wait.". That's not an argument, that's me pointing to the absurdity of your statement and finding it funny that for some strange reason you think border control in Dover & Calais ports are or should be technically different than how almost every other border in the entire world works.

Much like i find it funny how neither of you seem to have read what you were replying to. :)

 Bandwidth versus speed. It isn't complicated. Dumping a ferry full of people on "the other side" en masse is a far less efficient way than checking them, as they arrive, to be parked out of the way, on the vessel that'll take them away.

This has caused much news about getting away being delayed, but the hardship caused to the locals of Deal, Dover and surrounding area's has mostly been ignored :(

Typical **** press that only want to show one side and were even today asking (ITV) on a Deal/Dover social media page for video's from those caught up in this.

Is the traffic gone now? I'll be there tomorrow ~2ish with any luck.

Holidaymakers warned of worse delays on Saturday

Saturday could prove to be busier still this weekend after holidaymakers faced gridlocked roads around Dover today.
As six-hour queues made its way towards the Port of Dover, the chief executive of the Port of Dover, Doug Bannister, said being "let down" by poor resourcing at the French border was "immensely frustrating".
Meanwhile, Pierre-Henri Dumont, Republican MP for Calais, said these problems at the port will reoccur "because of ******".
He told BBC News: "This is an aftermath of ******. We have to run more checks than before."
Looking at the situation tomorrow, Jack Cousens, head of roads policy for the AA, said "drivers should continue to expect disruption".
He said: "As the schools closed their doors fully yesterday, Saturday could prove busier still this weekend.
"Drivers should continue to expect disruption and delays on major holiday routes to the southwest, eastern coast and ports of Dover and Folkestone.
"While many have decided to go at the start of the summer holidays, between now and the beginning of September when schools return, each Friday and Saturday will be busy on our roads.
"This is because these are the main switchover days for holiday lets."

What, bandwidth versus speed? We're not talking about broadband speeds here...LOL.

Dumping a ferry full of people on "the other side" en masse is no blooming different than dumping a plane full of people on "the other side" en masse and no different than dumping a ferry full of people on "the other side" en masse at Le Havre or any other port, it's hilarious that anyone thinks just because it's the Dover Calais crossing that it's somehow different than every other border crossing in the entire world.

This was a major issue long before COVID-19, but as usual the UK **** press would only concentrate on the poor holiday maker.

Dover and the surrounding area grind to a painful halt every year :(

Well it is, because those people aren't getting off the plane in a car. 200 people can fully disembark from a plane and be processed in a relatively small space, allowing the plane to leave. 200 cars can't, and if there's any sort of delay, that could lead to ferries being stuck while cars queue off the ramp.

I don't think Le Harve has anywhere near the frequency of sailings that the Dover-Calais route does, so its not an issue there....ferries at Calais have a much shorter turnaround time.

Edit: a quick Google suggests there's one Portsmouth-Le Harve sailing per day...and 25 per day between Dover-Calais. Quite clear to see that any delays at the point of disembarkation could quite quickly lead to problems on the latter route, and a logical enough conclusion for it not to be mocked as "hilarious".

Are you just trolling or can you really not see the difference?
The Dover - Calais ferry only goes to France. It's pretty simple to have the French border checks done before you travel. From an airport you could travel to many different countries, it's not so efficient to have checks for each country done in the departure airport.

Next person to mention the B word gets a ban for the weekend.

That’s insane. Are we really at the point of censoring people for mentioning the very thing that this thread and topic is highly related to, and based upon the available evidence, in all likelihood highly impacted by?

What a huge disappointment. Is this the way the moderation of these forums is going now?

I don’t think it’s so much censoring more preempting the crap storm of nonsense that would follow!
