Dragon Age: The Veilguard

Do you contribute to PC gamer?

There seems a correlation of nonsense between yourself and the them/thier/he/they/hee/haw/woo/hoo brigade.
No, I'm also not an easily offended halfwit who projects my triggers through a game I haven't played.

Put your slippers back on, fire up your godawful RGB lights and leave games to people who actually enjoy them.

Written by someone who doesn't play games

Quick Google search shows the writer is a black activist who usually writes stories about social justice and movie reviews, he posts one article per year about gaming for Time and doesn't have anything to do with gaming otherwise, a complete nobody, and if you read the Time GOTY article, much of sounds like he asked ChatGPT to write a summary of the game for him, non of the writing sounds like a person who actually plays games
Sounds like the perfect qualifications for a games writer for that "modern audience".

Have not finished the game played around 60 hours, but so far i would say its a good game
I'm about 20hrs in and I love it.

I'm confused about why the hate but maybe I am easily pleased.

Game looks fantastic on my G9 oled and the HDR is really good.

It's like fireworks going off playing as a mage.

All the DEI aside, that probably sums up why some people are so upset with games like this as much as anything.

RPG games of the 2000s deep engaging stories and faithful recreation of D&D rules

RPG games of the 2020s WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!! pretty colours!!!!11

Maybe the "modern audience" actually is a real thing? Just not a large enough audience to depend on for modern AAA slop though.

Judging by the noises coming out of studios like Ubisoft, the DEI hiring practices are finally coming home to roost and these companies are going to have to start making some tough decisions.

To paraphrase Tolkien, evil cannot create anything new, it can only corrupt and twist existing creations (such as turning the Elves into Orcs). I think we are about to move into a new age of gaming now as the US corporations begin to put the woke away. Hopefully the next Dragon Age (assuming there is one) will be a return to form.

Avoided it so far due to the sloppy handling of identity politics and the allegedly poor writing, but I will likely give it a try when it's heavily discounted. Although I always end up disappointed with DA sequels after the calibre of DA: Origins.

Yeah me too, got way too many games on the backlog as it is anyway

It's an awful game and an even worse RPG.

There are two types of people who enjoy it. Those who are given a pack of crayons and a piece a paper by the waitress when they go out for a meal and those who aren't sure who they are yet.

Anyone with a sane mind can see how certain influences have led to one of the most poorly written and executed RPG's of recent times.

Which is fine, everyone likes different things. Just don't expect it to be a commercial success.

Maybe it's because I never played any of the originals but hey I'm enjoying it.
My mate at work loves skull and bones and has put so many days into it and that was slated.

We all like different things and nothing wrong with that in my opinion.
Most people in this thread got their opinion from Youtubers and out of context videos.

Game is fine, nothing amazing but not bad at all

No one is going to be surprised by this news

Shouldn't laugh but...

HA! :cry::cry:

"As for me, my departure was voluntary, as I have been presented with an opportunity I couldn't turn down. I don’t want to say much more right now, but you can count on it being in the CRPG space and upholding the traditions of great characters."

Please leave the CRPG space completely and don't touch games ever again!

Edited - to be fair she only came onboard in 2022, and arguably turned it from a live service to a single player game, so I'll retract what I said.

In 18-24 months there's only so much you could possibly work with at that late stage in development...who knows what state it was in when she came onboard.

In other news though, Veilguard was only the 67th best selling game in 2024 - obviously coming out toward the end of the year will be a big factor:

However, the damning news is that Outlaws, which released at the same time to widely dismal sales figures was 47th, 20 places higher.

Maybe it's time for a bit of a reset? A few of these publishers and studios are old as dirt and have been churning out mediocre to poor games for over a decade, I'm not just talking about BioWare either in this regard.

Too much bloat, not enough understanding of what their actual markets want. I think at least some of that is paying too much attention to extremely vocal terminally online types on social media, and frankly they're a minority.

Tim Cain frequently posts his opinions on modern game development (aka one of the main people behind the creation of Fallout), he released a rather insightful video a few days back:

It's not all the developers fault, the community at large is confusing too, but I feel as though those that have ended up in charge of big projects have been a mixture of out of touch on top of meddling from higher ups.
