Drivers attitudes to cyclists

I always que at traffic lights on my bike, ok so i dont go to the front and hold up all the traffic behind me when they change to green..................i do however hold up all the traffic behind me when they change to green though. I may not hold up the 2 or 3 cars in front of me but what about the 5 or 6 cars behind me ?? People complain about cyclist going to the front of the que but either way i am holding up the traffic.

Exactly. I'm sure i hold up loads of cars by an astonishing amount of about 5 seconds regularly...big deal. Nobody rants on here about tractors or horses down country lanes.

In the first few seconds a bike has better acceleration than a car. A good cyclist can clear the junction before the driver has engaged first gear!

Nothing pees me off more on my daily commute than some **** on a bike causing a huge tailback of traffic on a busy, narrow road just because he thinks he "has as much right to use the road as anyone else". One person has the right to cause inconvenience for 50 others?

If I had my way they would be off the roads, or only allowed on certain ones.

They don't "think" they have as much right, legally they have MORE right to use the road.

When a traffic light goes green I usually set off before the cars thats cause I get into a low gear, sometimes I get into a too low gear and end up doing front wheelies due to the fact I still dont realise how light the bike is compared to my old ones, I look stupid doing then and drivers proberbly think I'm very silly and I'm like :o

In york there is this stretch of road, its got cycle lanes on each side of the road and also on one side of road its also got a cycle lane on the footpath  seperating footpath from cycle lane with a thick 10cm white line.

I find it very scary going into the middle of lanes (dual lanes) as cars wont slow down and then they throw abuse.

Also there is this part in town, bust lane on left, car lane on right both go into one lane so traffic lights to stop bus lane whilst other lane is moving and there is a bike lane in the bus lane and at the traffic lights this has no white line so surely even though that lane is on red you can still go through to the second set of red lights into the single lane as cars wont be using the cycle lane?

Also are people on mopeds/motorcycles able to use bike lanes? other day there was this man on a moped in the cycle lane

Wash your mouth out with soap! As a biker I take offence at you considering a person who rides a scooter to be a motorcyclist  People who ride a scooter generally have only a CBT, are a law unto themselves and look stupid! Its why they never get a bikers nod :p

I know they aint motorcyclists :p

If you have never cycled on a country road with traffic whizzing by at 60mph+ and only inches from your handlebars (even though they have another 3ft of room on their right before they cross the median) then I suggest you try it out and discover just how stupid some car drivers can be.

There are good and bad among all road using groups. The fact of the matter is that cyclists have as much right as everyone else to be using the road so get over it. Blaming cyclists for holding up traffic is a bit lame as usually it is the lead car who thinks he needs 10ft of room before he can pass. I also cycle through busy city traffic and I find that what annoys most drivers is the fact they can't get away from a guy on a bike that costs 20 times less than their car. It's a big ego comedown. There are also a fair amount of motorists who park on cycle lanes meaning cyclists have to go out into the road so blame those selfish drivers for that one.

In twenty years of cycling I've been involved in one major accident and that was a driver running into the back of my bike at 45mph. He was speeding and the cops told me that he confessed to not being fully aware of the road ahead as he was trying to change a CD. Four months off work with that one. I've also had numerous near misses with the highlight of the bunch being an old duffer who pulled out in front of me because he thought my 40W halogen front lamp was actully a street light. Yep, a moving street light.

So, I'll reiterate. Most cyclists stick to the highway code and some don't. The same can be said for car drivers and bikers and before anyone has a go at me for seeing things only from a cyclists viewpoint they should know that I also drive cars, LGVs and HGVs, I've passed the advanced driving test and I'm an Emergency Responder ie, I drive Fire Engines.

Is the first one the area next to the new Morrison's and the second on Hull Road?

The one near Morrisions is dodgy: I always (regardless of direction) cycle on the side with the "travellers" camp. The other side is poorly thought out.
