Hey guys, looking to get into Driving sim racing and nvidia surround,

Have decided to get the wheel stand pro to start,
but having trouble choosing everything else.
Looking at the fanatec GT2 or GT3 RS wheel but really dont know the difference,
the TH8RS Shifter,
and the Fanatec V2 pedals,

need to look into a gear shifter peice like the F1 style, with lights to change gear, havent a clue where to look for one, and something like a rev counter either dial or screen (like ones on iphone ive seen) as well,

Any ideas on this guys??

Get a Fanatec Clubsport Wheel Base + The Formula Rim + The Clubsport v2 Pedals = Mint Setup with everything you require.

Then get iracing and never play any other driving sim again (or at least until assetto corsa comes out)

Im not made of money haha, just want to ease into the Racing sim games, Iracing looks awesome, just need opinions on cheaper items!!

For a great budget set up, find a DFGT, new or second hand. Then find G25 / G27 pedals second hand and buy a bodnar box to connect them to your PC.

As for the shifter I can't say.

If you play iRacing get a small android tablet for dash / gear / speedo / telemetry stuff. There is software which does all this.

Maybe consider dropping the TH8 shifter for now and spend the extra on the Fanatec CS wheel base and just on wheel rim for now. It's unlikely that you'll use an H pattern shifter for iRacing and even using the TH8 in sequential mode is only suitable for a few cars. Most drivers use paddle shifters for all cars.

After all you are buying the top of the range Fanatec pedals, it would be a shame not to have the best Fanatec wheel to go with them. :D:D

I would advise to not go all out for your first set. I started off on a G27 kit and moved to a T500RS. My mate also bought a G27 kit and only used it for a couple of weeks and now its just a waste of money but at least it didn't cost him massive amounts.

You will either find the novelty wears off within a few weeks or you enjoy it. I still enjoy it a couple of months later after buying my first wheel and have a race most evenings even if its a quick race.

I wouldn't advise splashing out on expensive stuff until you are sure you want to do it! Just get a G27 kit and see how you feel after a month.

Very sound advice.

I've been on and off with my racing since getting a G25...sometimes I'll play several hours a day and sometimes I'll barely play an hour a week. It's all about the games you want to play, iRacing is great if you have the money and time but unless you are fairly dedicated you won't get your monies worth out of your subscription.

Question is...What games do you intend to play and really how much use do you feel you'd get from it? Personally I am glad I didn't go spending more on a wheel, it's spent more time collecting dust than in use (Which I never thought would happen).

Because of this thread I feel the need to get my G27 and race seat back out and get shift 2 back on the go, it was the only game I really liked as it wasn't too in depth and was very plug and play, Audi A6 turbo charged...... yes please.

Im going to play most of my racing games with it, Forza (IF i go for the GT2), Burnout, F1, Dirt, etc etc, and im a pretty avid gamer, being a student has its perks of abit of free time!!

regarding the expensive stuff, I dont think id buy it new anyway, and the Fanatec Porsche wheel seemed a good compromise,

Im looking into nvidia surround and love the three screens and racing seems to be the best use of it!

So you are looking to buy 'Sim' equipment for arcade physics based games? On that basis I'd not recommend anything above a DFGT, you honestly won't be gaining anything if those are the games you intend to play.

I agree.

All of the games you mentioned wouldn't be classed as sims at all. Maybe the F1 games are the most sim like out if those you mentioned.

I have a DFGT and my mate (Blackvault) has a G27 - the G27 is obviously a lot nicer feel and that, but the DFGT does the same thing, and I'm not better at driving on the more expensive option! If you're not that bothered then get the DFGT it's still great. If you're going to get into it properly then a G27 is a better wheel.

they are the current games i own, but Iracing seems appealing, what other sims are available?

Race 07 and expansions. A little old now graphics wise, but still a decent sim.

Live For Speed, same as above and mostly fictional tracks.

rFactor, great sim, loads and loads of free mods and content.

rFactor 2, still in beta but available to buy. Not played it myself.

NetKar Pro, great FFB and physics, graphics are pretty dated and mostly fictional tracks. Wil be replaced by Assetto Corsa which is look very good.

pCARS, still in alpha development and not available to buy anymore. Someone may lend you their login to try it out though.

They look sensational, thats the kinda gaming scene i want to get into, Always loved cars but never been able to afford a real one!!

If you really want to have that clutch and shifter feel, go no higher than a G27. But as many have said, a DFGT is probably the better bet to get started. You can enjoy all these sims with auto clutch - indeed there are several cars in iRacing that I still drive without a clutch even though I have one, simply because it's more consistent.

If you are looking to get really into it and are dedicated to learning how to drive the cars and get fast then iRacing is probably your best bet. its the most serious game I've ever played, its more of a hobby than a game at times :p Its the only other racing game where I've been able to have good clean racing with random people as well.

Have to agree.

The other sims are great as single player games or hotlaping, but unless you join a private online racing club then iRacing is the only place you'll get clean racing. All the other games online are full of idiots in public severs.
