DRONES

Is this the new must have kit for an aspiring peeping tom then?
Not really, they make enough noise that they're hardly inconspicuous and the wide angle lenses on GoPros etc. mean you have to be pretty close to things you want to see. You're probably good to go if the person you want to peep on is blind and deaf.

So how is it a drone rather than just an RC copter if it isn't controlled remotely with a video stream?
It isn't. It's a quadcopter.

Unfortunately the masses seem to misunderstand what a drone is and use the term incorrectly all the time.

It's a remote controlled helicopter with a camera stuck on it. Calling them "drones" seems be a PR exercise.

A mate has one and he lost it the other day after it landed beyond the tree line. I asked him if he could access the video remotely or if it has some kind of GPS so he could locate it and the answer was no to both. "Great 'Drone' then" was my reply.

Not really, a drone can be an unmanned/pilotless arial vehicle, doesnt neccasaraly have to have a camera fitted

Most people who "build" quadcopters, are intending to fit FPV gear in them eventually anyway, whats the biggy.

And its only a "quadcopter" if it has 4 motors ;), if you want to get in to technicality

The manufacturer calls them drones in their packaging and marketing material.

So I have called them drones.

sorry that this is a huge problem for you.

that's expensive for something i'd get bored with in a matter of hours...

More like minutes for me, unless there is a GoPro attached to the bottom...

The one I want that comes with its own camera and a giro for stablisation with 2 remotes (one for the pilot and one for the camera)...pricey though!

But it has to be doing something (other than just flying), if it's not filming people, shooting people or delivering parcels you can't call it a "drone" really because it has no automotive purpose and therefore the name doesn't fit.

The name comes from the idea that you are replacing humans with automation for a task. A simple remote controlled helicopter that can do nothing but fly isn't replacing anything. If it’s just anything that flies without a pilot that makes a kite a ‘drone’ too.

Well then most of the multirotar builds will be fulfulling their roles, as most of them will have a camera (non-feed) and FPV gear at some stage attached to them

I wouldnt call them "pointless" without a camera though, I am flying mine at the moment in here

Without a camera at the moment and its brilliant fun.

But it all depends on what you buy, my kit can be expanded in many ways, and radio capabilities which can keep me going for a long time tweaking settings/adding stuff.

I would think most pre-built drones will be shipped stock with some sort of camera device anyway these days (even if it is just a keyring camera)

Is it the same guy who once bought those £99 Light Bulbs or whatever they were a few years ago that has bought these in too? :p

What about those drones where you can get the fpv? Ive been looking in to it but they seem to only be available in kit form and cost like £1000+ is that right?

I saw the goggles cost about £300 and then you need the radio controlled receiver and device and gps? Surprised they have not made this cheaper yet.

No :/

Might be best if you are looking to get in to it to look in the multirotar thread in GD

I have a DJI F450 kit with Naza V2 GPS flight controller, that came to £280, then FrSky Taranis radio gear came to £180, FPV gear probably another 150-200 +, depending on what you buy

However you can build them on a more strict budget, or you can spend more (thousand(s)

You can build your model from the parts, or you can buy these pre-built ones, which tend to work out more expensive
