DSL Speed reduction :(

They are being total pleb's, and unfortunately this is kind of what i expected from a mass market "consumer" ISP - they cant be bothered basically. They can definitely change it (or can get it changed) virtually instantly, as eclipse have done it while on the phone to them more than a couple of times for me. I used to have to get it reset after virtually every period of high winds.

Is it stable with an SNR of 10? If it is then it looks like perhaps the issues on the line have passed. If so, i would get the line reported if plusnet require a fault to be raised for them to reset the SNR.

Yes it seems completely stable now - I've manually reduced the SNR percentage on my router right down to 5%.

Currently:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1952 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 10.3 db 8.0 db

Surely my line can support faster than this? It always used to!

You are still on an SNR of 10.3, this can go much lower, but it looks like you have reached the maximum of the adjustment on your router (they can only influence it a certain amount).

It needs resetting at the DLM back to 6, which would equate to a sync of around 2300-2400K, it may then train back to the 8 or so which you were running before which would drop it back to the 2250 odd.

2250 is fine! Thats what I want back.

Is it reasonable to get back to Plusnet and tell them I dont accept that there is nothing they can do as numerous other ISP's can adjust it without issue?

Indeed :) Perhaps raise it as a fault if they wont do it.

The problem with that is that eventually the line will vary enough for DLM to kick it back to a 12 or 15dB profile and the process starts all over again! :(
Typically it'll take about 14 days of the line being stable for DLM to set the profile to a lower SNR, but it'll intervene to raise the SNR within a day or so (depending how 'unstable') the line is being.

2250 would be pretty awful, being 22kbps too low for the 2Mbps IP profile.

Was about to say that... :)

His line has been stable for a long time at 8-9, h has now manually manipulated it to 10 where it is proving stable. The line issues appear to have passed for the time being, resetting it to 6 will see it train back to it's previous long term setting in all likelyhood.

The DLM will lower the snr automatically yes, but as you indicate it will take a good couple of weeks between alterations. This is why fox needs to have it manually reset. I have been through this time and time again at my old property.

There is 63db of attenuation because although my nearest exchange is 2 miles away BT connected the hoouse to one the other side of the city instead.

Its probably a bit late in terms of your "time left" living at your parents, but you can actually pay to have the line re-routed to a different exchange. The process is called an "out of area" line installation. My parents had a load of quotes drawn up for this very process years ago, as the Henley exchange was upgraded many years before Wargrave yet was still in range for ADSL.

Probably useless but it may be worth querying BT re that if there really is a much better exchange available and you are likely to stay for a decent length of time.

2 wire 2700HGV routers can be very good on a long line.

Will probably need to get one that's unlocked though as I believe they are locked to BT internet, being a BT router.

This is what I used to use for my poor line, before it sadly died. :( Bought a DrayTek and so far it's holding out well also.

With the DrayTek or 2Wire I was/am able to hold between 2.4 - 2.7Mb. :) Like Fox, I am at the very edge of the cut of point for the exchange I connect to, but manage to hold this speed with 58dB loop attenuation and 5dB SNR Margin.

I've tried most things to help, ADSLnation filtered faceplate on the Master Socket. I've put the Router away from Phones and the likes, and also run a shielded ADSL cable. The biggest thing that helped was getting on to my ISP and getting BT out to replace the overhead line to the property. They also checked the line all the way back to the exchange and found breaks, which they told me they've fixed, as when it rained the speed used to drop right off. (Moisture getting in?).

Anyway, I ramble on. :o

That SNR is very very high now, hence the very low sync. It needs to be lowered, all you can do is keep pestering plusnet to do it :(

Well they just refuse to answer me - I'm being very polite but my tickets are still 'Waiting for support team answer' even though the average ticket answer time is 10 hours...

I raised a ticket yesterday for something and got a reply in ~1 hour, so I think they are definitely ignoring you. Either that, or the 1 guy they employ who knows his **** from his elbow is really busy.

That is totally obscene service :/ I thought you were moving to O2 anyway? :)

Wow, they replied!

Saying simply that they've requested a reset of the SNR for me and it'll be done within 48 hours.

I wonder why:

a) That took almost a week
b) They couldnt just do it in the first place?
