DSL Speed reduction :(

Does this ever stop?

Just got back from a weekend away. No idea if PN have requested the reset or not but my router is connected at an EVEN SLOWER connection speed with an EVEN HIGHER SNR!

I'm now at 1152kbps with 18db SNR!!!?!

Why is this happening and what can I do :(

I used to have a stable connection @ 2200ishkbps with 6-7db SNR!

1152kbps sounds suspiciously like home1000. What's your upstream like, and does the downstream speed change when you reconnect?

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1152 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db

It's been gradually getting more and more rubbish as the week has gone :(

Using the DGTeam firmware I can adjust the SNR percentage. If I knock it right the way down to 5%, my connection gets much better:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 2048 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 10.2 db 9.0 db

This is far down as I can set it, so I cant get it any higher than this.

After that little experiment I've put everything back to normal on the router incase PN are yet to request the SNR reset.

Oddly I am now finding even the upstream is beginning to vary. It's previously been rock solid always on 448. As I type this my connection is once again unstable and lasts about 3-4 minutes before dropping and renegotiating with the exchange.

Currently connected at:

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1280 kbps 416 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 16.7 db 7.0 db

Edit:

Now we have...

Connection Speed 1376 kbps 384 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 16.0 db 6.0 db

What router do you have mate?

After years and years of having slow speeds (We are about 4-5 miles from the exchange) of around 512kb. This was with Bt homehub, a Dlink router,a Draytek router. I plugged in a Linksys router last week and since the speeds we get have doubled!

It seems a lot depends on the chipset used in the router

From what I've read, the broadcoms tend to be best for getting every last ounce of speed from the line..

Nope but as I have been with them for 10 years a family member has become dependant on the email address that came with the account.....

tbh I don't think another isp will fix this, he has a line issue that needs to be sorted by bt.

do what I did to get bt to come out, disconnect the router, tell the isp you can't get sync at all :D

offer bt man lots of tea :D

All this and you are not tied down to a contract! :p

Get the hell out of there, as bledd says, email isn't a problem, just forward them. You will probably find that they won't even cut off your emails.

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 1120 kbps 448 kbps
Line Attenuation 63.5 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 17.0 db 8.0 db

I'm going to have a 128k internet connection by next week at this rate.

Got sick of yet more instability so I swapped the DG834GT out for my rubbishy old Speedtouch 580i.

Instantly synced at 1.5mbit this time. We'll see if its stable, but it sure seems strange..

I have these same problems but with sky atm... I had a perfectly stable connection 24hr online for a yr and no disconnects. Then couple weeks ago got dc'd every 8 minutes, speed dropped down below 1mb down to 256kb at times when i would run stable above 4mb. Still no solutions have sorted it. Tried the usual resetting/new filters/new router which gave more stability (with still 5dcs or so a day-.-) but the speed is still under 1mb when it should be 4mb. Very frustrating when you go from a perfect connection to one thats like viewing the web in the 1980s. Seems imposible to sort it.
