Dune: Awakening

So....

Worth playing?
Ive played pretty much every mmo since Ultima online. I know it's not billed as an mmo but am I gonna love it. :p are the survival mechanics trivial? Can I enjoy it solo. I'd the endgame a mess like I've heard. Or is this a case of enjoy the ride to higher levels then get bored quit. Which is also fine.

My playtimes are fairly pitiful these days, compared to 8h raids 4 days a week.....
I know weak.

Its a great game. I'm fine soloing so far. Its more like Age of Conan and less like an MMO. There are not one but two constraints when playing, these may change your mind about buying.
You need to collect fuel to keep your base shield from shutting down, its very easy to collect and will last 20 days at max I think. There is also a tax you have to pay, this has to be done every 2 weeks. Its not much to pay and easy to get but I think after two weeks your shield gets shut down. Shields shutting down is not good and you will loose everything not in a bank or on your toon. You may get a grace period of not paying but I have not confirmed that.

Exception would be if you have private server because it has a whopping three options, sandstorms, tax, and security zones.

thanks for info
Last night I shut down my advanced fief base and moved it to the lowest tier fief. Still plenty of room to build a three storey base, these do not incur taxes. I'm playing the game slowly so this is one less thing to have to keep an eye on.

If you look at your fief console it tells you alongside your bases power management how much tax you owe. You have to fly to Harko Village or Arakeen to see the Tax Collector (I think).

I have a private server and Tax is the only thing I turn off. You still have a quest line to complete regarding paying to the Emperor but after that nothing is paid.

As for the game overall, 60+ hours in and loving it. Taking my time building, crafting and resource gathering with some excursions along the way with my buddies.

Mixed feelings on the DD and landsratt now that I've spent more time there. It's very rough currently and the zerg is king. I also watched multiple missions be claimed within minutes of going live and of course, once a slot is claimed, none of the rewards can be gained. It seems very half thought out, push small group play without rewarding the group. PvE hand-in's is how you claim the slots; it takes over 23h holding a control point to just win the top prize, which has been the cosmetic colours.

Hold 1 cap point:
Reward Time (minutes) Time (hours & minutes)
700 70 1 hr 10 min
3500 350 5 hr 50 min
7000 700 11 hr 40 min
10500 1050 17 hr 30 min
14000 1400 23 hr 20 min
---
70000 7000 116 hr 40 min

About 100hrs in so far all solo and there is a lot of game there for the solo player. Survival mechanics get in the way at the start, namely water, but once you get a good stillsuit and dew collector it becomes a non issue. Base building is essential to a certain extent but if it isn't your bag you can just do what you need to progress.

Don't expect a huge amount from the combat (PvE anyway). It's serviceable.

It's incredibly immersive if that is your bag.

Lot's of quests (main, side, faction etc).

I wasn't expecting a huge amount going in but it is the only game I am playing at the moment.

I played a lot of the beta and just felt combat was nowhere near tight enough for a pvp endgame.
If they made a good pve endgame i would definitely buy.
Yer man Cohh explains the glaring issue in this vid.

The fact that endgame right now is PvP when 99% of the game leading up to the endgame is PvE is terrible game design. I've had a lot of fun with the game but I cannot stand PvP so I avoid it. I hope they have PvE endgame in the works.

The endgame is undoubtedly the worst part of the game, the absolute strangest thing about it is that the endgame area is a free for all, its not even faction based, its not like its Atriedes vs Harkonnens, its just anyone against anyone. That really surprised me and I ended up wondering what the point was in even picking a faction

House v House I could understand but a free for all is just weird, The game director "Joel" and his vision make for a game that doesn't have a long shelf life.
