Hmm top 5.. Here's 6

So hard with different teams.
In no particular order.
I'd love any of these 2 drivers in my team.
Hard to place Russell vs Hamilton.
CL at his best is brilliant. But does make mistakes.

Alonso is brilliant, I can't believe he's still so good. My favourite driver, pretty bummed he's leaving alpine.

MV
FA
LN
CL
GR
LH

Not even putting Hamilton in the top 5? That's an edgy take.
I think he's a great driver, and you saw glimpses of it last year when he was fighting for position, but if you put any of the drivers that I mentioned in his 2014-2020 cars, they'd have won some titles.

I find the others to be better rounded drivers, which extends beyond just driving the car.

Baffled anyone would put Alonso above Hamilton when even at Alonso's absolute peak he couldn't beat total rookie Hamilton.

I'd order the top of the current grid as LH, MV, GR, CL. After that Alonso, Norris, or possibly Sainz - I'm not really sure. Alonso has been much better than I expected on his return, but I don't think he's as good as he was at his absolute best. At his best, he'd slot in between George and Leclerc.

You'd put Lewis above Max, even though he's being beaten this season in the same car by a rookie?
Lewis has out-driven George this season, George is ahead in the championship due to luck with safety cars and Lewis trying experimental setups earlier in the season. I'd say it's bold to put Max ahead of Lewis given he hasn't won one legitimate championship yet compared to Lewis's 8.

Relatively mediocre race but livened up towards the end with the VSC / SC.

Dominant drive by Max. Whilst he and RBR were essentially gifted his first WDC last season, they have closed this season down fair and square and been consistently fast and on point with strategy even against some initially strong competition. Meanwhile their nearest competitor, Ferrari, are falling apart at the seams even though they have a competitive car.

I reckon it’s much in the bag for Max and a good job all round at RBR.

I’m hoping Merc can be competitive next year - but for this season I would like to see them challenge Ferrari for no2 in the WCC and I also reckon Russell could be an outlier for 2nd in the WDC if Merc can stay up near the front.

I put Russell as favourite for 2nd in the WDC right now. The Merc is now the second best car at most tracks, whilst Ferrari failed to capitalise on their strength in the first part of the season and a couple of mistakes from Leclerc have left him only 13 pts ahead of Russell who has proven his ability to consistently extract good points at almost every race. Pérez has the same lead, but he seems to be falling further and further behind Max and has finished behind George in three of the last four races.

I reckon we'll see Hamilton pull past Sainz too. Max, Russell, Leclerc, Pérez, Hamilton, Sainz, and Norris as best of the rest.

Depends on the layout of the tracks left. Monza is going to suit RBR, Alpine, and I'm expecting Williams to have a decent weekend. McLaren are going to right at the back.

I'd guess that Japan is likely to be Mercedes's best chance of the top step this season. If it's a clean race, the lack of a long straight and them one stopping.

By that logic, Lewis should be on 6 championships. If he didn’t keep crashing to people in corners, he’d be in a better spot :D
