I thought it was normal to only put on a new plate once you receive the logbook back with your new registration

If you do it online you can 'instantly' put the new plates on, if it goes through ok (still need to ring your insurance though to swap it over)

Didnt realise you could do online, what documents do you need then?

Been a while since I did it, the private plate green certificate and your V5 as you need some reference numbers off both for the online form you fill in.

V778 plate retention form, or V750 certificate of entitlement (if a new reg).
The wording online is "You must be ready to swap the plates immediately".
