DX11.1 not coming to Win 7

So, what type of kit will I need to go 3d on native 11.1? Ps why stick to windows 7 when windows 8 performs faster in games and everything that uses the cpu by around 5%. I find it a lot easier to search for stuff now - instead of looking for a file in my drives with tiny icons I just hit win then type it and it shows it as a picture I could pick out of a list a mile away. Wanna play some old game you got somewhere or emulator and cant find a rom just type tyhe name of the game and there ya go.

Surely you guys seen this comming,Just another way to make gamers upgrade to windows 8...all money.

Roll on steam and linux development...hopefully things will start to change and we gamers wont have to stay with windows forever.

It will only stops developers from using it IMHO. What's the point in creating games restricted to such a (relatively) small platform.

We hardly have enough DirectX 11 compatible games, a lot of people have only recently upgraded to Windows 7 and with Microsoft's plans to release a new Windows version in the not-so-distant future will surely raise a few questions as to whether it's worth investing in this platform at all.

I always find this funny,ie it cost gamers more money to buy a modern game(£30 plus) or video card then to upgrade to Win8 which is the cheapest route, they moan about Win7 not getting DX 11.1 improvement however its only minor update IMHO and very cheap to upgrade if you want or need it.

Linux, are you aware how weird linux will be to use for anyone that really loves windows 7?

I actually prefer Ubuntu to Win7 for layout etc on my dual boot PC that has both installed(actually it did have 7 but I upgraded it to 8).....Win8 is actually growing on me layout wise, not hard to adjust to the new look/changes and easy enough to game on etc....with no issues.

I wonder if Microsoft will bring a further updated DX to Win8 down the road IE DX12?

yeah cus so many games ran DX 10 on windows 7 xD

lets be honest most games are still being made for dx 9 the dx 11 tweaks can only be achieved by the ones with the kit and most of them will upgrade to 8 as it is superior to windows 7 on many levels including a nerd favourite Boot up and access time.

I would like to add that windows 8 has actually improved my connection in games like CSS and CS:go with much better lerp.

On the whole the only people who won't upgrade to 8 are the dinosaurs who won't want dx 11.1 anyway.

People hate change but they will all come round. Took some people so Long to get off XP and some still haven't!!!!

Steam for Linux can't come fast enough tbh, then MS won't be able to dictate the gaming industry.

Gaming has been the only thing keeping me from dumping Windows in the past, that and I never truly hated Windows before Windows 8.

They have done Linux a big favour with Windows 8.

MS dictate the gaming industry? Did you not notice Sony and Nintendo, not to mention iOS and Android as pretty major gaming platforms?

Damn that evil Microsoft and not upgrading an old OS when it's been replaced, I demand Windows 98 should have DX11.1 made available immediately. ;)

Interestingly if you read this thread MS get dammed for not back porting the "good bits" of Windows 8 to 7 by some, then, just for the giggles, get dammed by others that Win8 isn't worth upgrading to because there's nothing new or unique to make it worth upgrading.

Then you get the like of lolgroen complaining that the MS bean counters have the audacity to offer a Win8 upgrade cheap for early adopters? Damn them and their evil "cheap trick" ways. They should charge more so then he could moan it was too expensive and wasn't different enough.

Win8 offers everything 7 does, plus a load of improvements for less than the cost of a console game. If you want the new stuff, upgrade, if you're happy to not, then stay on the old version.

Linux on the desktop isn't going to appeal to anyone in the consumer market other than "geeks" who like tinkering with an OS for the foreseeable future I'm afraid. If you can't wrap your brain around how to find the start screen in Windows 8 without a start gem you've got no chance of ever changing to Unbuntu. The only reason Valve have tried to bring steam to Linux is it looked like they might have had competition in digital distribution from the MS Store seem to have had the corporate equivalent of a hissy fit :) .

Valve take something like a 30% slice of the sales price off of developers just for publishing games on steam. How does that fit with the Linux Open Source view of the world?

Exactly. And if you want all the gaming options and peripherals it is going to be laden with proprietary software, too. If you're lucky enough to get it at all. Not to mention DRM.

Plus, I don't really see how getting locked in with Valve is any better... but hey, you pays your money you takes your choice.

Ah this won't make me want to upgrade to 8 either. Anyone here seem to be skipping every other MS release?

Looking back i was on Win98, upgraded to XP, upgraded to 7. Guess I will be upgrading to 9 :).

7 has been the been awesome all these years I must say. I am not ready to upgrade yet!

Another pointless upgrade to DX11 doesn't bother me a great deal. I'm still not buying this nasty stopgap O/S no matter what silly/desperate stunts M$ pull. I was burnt by Vista.

Windows 9 I'll consider.
Sorry, by using "M$" you just disqualified yourself from anyone taking you even remotely seriously :D

What does DX11.1 actually give you then?
I've been fairly non-plussed by most recent DX versions and until the next generation of consoles come out I doubt that many games will take advantage of it anyway (DX9 is still the 'default stance' for many developers it seems).

Never used steam. Don't care about steam. Don't care if a .1 release doesn't make it to an Operating System that's no longer the current version. All OS have a finite support cycle, and XP only lasted so long because Vista sold (relatively) poorly.
