Dyslexia

they are also some of the most intelligent people this country has to offer
Thats taking it a bit far... Really. I respect to those with bad dyslexia who pushed through it, but by percent I dont believe they have a higher IQ than those without... Show me stats to the contrary...

I think it's tantamount to equality or perhaps even more so, that some of the world's greatest minds were apparently dyslexic.

Thomas Edison.
Albert Einstein.
Pablo Picasso.
Winston Churchill.
George Washington.
Thomas Jefferson.
Leonardo da Vinci.

I'm not saying they trump those without dyslexia, but there's no denying that those with dyslexia cannot be smart. :)

Absolutely.

My 5yr old son has slight autism (aspergers), doesn't stop him and he has learned to "cope" with the differences. He tends to try writing backwards, spells words with the letters jumbled up etc occasionally. He is slightly behind on his reading/writing skills but he is as bright if not brighter than his peers as judged by his teachers (mainstream school).

Just because you are seen as "lacking" in one skill doesn't mean the rest of your skills are too :) Too much emphasis these days on "conforming", if our race hadn't gone out on a limb in the past sometimes we wouldn't be where we are..

I'm not either, but I dont think it makes you any smarter. But its possible, I have dyspraxia and a high IQ.

No, but some people with dyslexia really are some of the smartest people ever.

I didn't say they were intelligent as a result of their dyslexia, rather despite their dyslexia.

Albert Einstein had dyslexia.

i have it very mildly, spelling, which, usually isn't a problem anymore, i have managed to train myself out of how I used to spell words, which were sometimes VERY wonky indeed. There are still some words i can not for the life of me spell correctly on the first try, 'because' being one of them :(.

everything else i'm pretty good on :) punctuation is usually fine (if it's not it's because i'm being lazy :o ), reading is and always has been perfect (reading age of 21 from the age of 13) and while my handwriting is messy, if i'm writing so mething that matters ie exam essays then it's usually readable :p.

i have known people who are a lot worse, but to be fair one or two of them I put it down to sheer laziness, they'd bunk lessons designed to help them improve, and they just wouldn't try.

there are those that try and deserve help, and there are those that don't and deserve to fail because of laziness.

No, I'm not. I'm saying they make up some of the most intelligent in the country. Not becuase they have dyslexia, but despite the fact they have dyslexia.

Sorry if I sound at all confrontational, but I dont mean to... Just your first post didnt seem to clear.

Buit what you're saying is that some dyslexic individuals achieve greater academic success because of the learning techniques and learn to put in more effort etc... ?

That makes sense, I think.

No, he's saying having dyslexia doesn't stop them from being intelligent. The case in point was some of the greatest minds of our history seem to have dyslexia. Which is pretty much proof that dyslexia does not hinder potential intelligence whatsoever.
