Dyslexia

Might i point out at GCSE i have an A* in english litriture and english language. The reason for this being i carefuly picked words i thought i was spelling correctly and that english exams them selves are not really based on spelling. My grama on the other hand when i try hard can be quite good. English is based on your ability to undersatnd what has been writen and put your view across on it mainly at lower levels i found examination wize. Your inability to spell only comes at a dissadavantage mainly for things like CV's when its crushal. But the inability to spell isn't the main problem with dislexia when it comes to exams. Extra time doesn't help you spell better becuase you oftern cannot see your mistakes.

And as for chemistry i can say my self that i had problems with some chemicals. Apart form spelling them obserdly but things like

Ethanal, Ethanol, Alkene Alkane etc. You see the problems?

Hahaha! :D And they say GCSEs are too easy nowadays...

Do you honestly think it is justified that you received an A* for English Language, based upon your demonstration of English in this thread? The mind boggles :(

I hope you can also see the problems that myself and others here find though in believing that it is a real problem if by your admission, if you concentrate hard enough, you can do pretty well. Does kind of undermine the argument that dyslexics simply can't see their mistakes??

Again I would like to repeat for the record that I do believe that some dyslexia sufferers have a genuine issue but that many others just use it as an excuse for lazy work. The lecturer from Sheffield in the article makes a similar point about bandwagon jumping just to get more time etc.

That is an intersting read^ :)

“The irony here is that the decoding of information – ie, reading – does not require a high degree of intelligence,” he says. “Comprehension of information is linked to IQ, but reading is not.” Furthermore, he says, so-called symptoms of dyslexia – letter reversal, clumsiness, poor short-term memory and inconsistent hand preference when writing – are commonly found in all who struggle to read, not just those considered to be dyslexic.

yes iv read this before and whatched the horizon episode on it. (before i was diagnoesed.) The argument is more about the difination of dyslexia (covered this earlyer page 2 i think) not about if childern who have this condition need help or not. Basically if he was right the only difrence for me would be that i would be classed as a person with learning disicultys and not persifically a dyslexic. I would still get all the same help.

you quite clearly dont understand what english is about

*hint* its not a spelling test

As apposed to an article written by someone who has a view they wanted to express.....but in your favour.

Words cannot express.....

Sigh. If i found an article saying cancer doesn't exist would you go by the thousands of experts that sware by it and research it. Or the few articles i can find that say otherwize.

You take arguements far out of context and are boring me now.

Well considering i was put in a set 3 out of 5 (most people in my class got D's and E's) and i came out with A*'s id say that my ability in english is very justified. Thats what happens when your intelligent you see. Spelling is not important in an english exam.

Woah woah woah, let's not be silly now - English at GCSE is based on how much pompous rubbish you can write, not intelligence! :p

I'm sorry but it damn well should be imo. If you want a test of what things mean in different contexts and all that carp [sic] then save that for the Literature section. English language should be completely about how well you understand the rules and laws of the language.

Also surely to get an A*, your grammar, punctuation and spelling would have to be absolutely spot on??? If that's not the case then I really am concerned about the education system...

I find it more amusing that Bigdave has already admitted that his appalling spelling is not down to dyslexia but pure laziness. It seams others have jumped on the bandwagon too.

Why don't you use a dictionary on your browser out of interest?

O i do, i just cant be bothered in correcting them in a convisation of if dyslexia exists.

Also If you think extra time in exams should be given.
Should fat people be given free goals in sports ? Should they also only have to run the 100m in 75m ?

Dyslexia is a contagious condition, for the same reasons it is often considered hereditary.

If one's spellling, punctuation and grammar are abysmal then one should not receive the highest mark in English language! It makes a mockery of the GCSE system if this can happen.

We are not talking about Cancer, the Holocaust or Ghosts. We are talking about a psycological learning difficulty.

That is a fair point to make, but unfortunetly thats not how the system works. Litriture is definitly one of my strong points i found as i also got an A* in history and RE. Which are just literacy really.

Im sorry how is this proof? The fact i said that i dont want to correct my spelling mistakes by using a spell checker. DIFFERNT TO A DICTIONARY in this. The spell checker is highlighting my mistakes. I CANNOT SEE THEM MY SELF WITHOUT IT TELLING ME THERE IS A MISTAKE. If i could i wouldn't be dyslexic. Furhter more if you want me to use a dictionary in my exams then you need to give me 100% extra time probably.

You fail.

it really isnt. obviously u didnt do A level english

this is like saying maths is about how well you can do sums (it isnt btw)

A good point. I do further maths and maths A level. Set to come out with A's. My further maths teacher says he cant add very well but thats not what maths is about.
