E-bike snobbery

I really hope they enforce the current Ebike law and get rid of all those illegal Ebikes off pavement and roads. We should be able to enjoy the freedom of riding ebikes and start from 250w and 15mph and then work with the system to may be increase the motor power to 500w etc. We have drone laws now allows sub 250g to fly more freely and a system where you have to register to get a Pilot ID and then get insurance for the drone (usually join a club or drone specialist insurance) to enjoy those freedom. Shouldn't we have the same for Ebikes? The pilot ID is not just money grabbing but a compulsory basic training course. An Ebike ID and also register the bike and display the ID on the bike and motor etc.

I have the DJI mini 2 and a pilot ID, I also have a 250w Ebike which is restricted to 15mph. I really hate it when people just spoils the fun for everyone, this UK dude have a YouTube channel with his Ebike business showing details of building a 6000W dual Motor ebike and then filming himself testing it on UK roads. Madness. How is he not arrested?

That's like asking Coppers to stand near every traffic lights to watch cars going through on red, there isn't enough Coppers.
I've been out this morning through 4 traffic lights there and back and witnessed at least 20 vehicles going through red and nothing will be done.
Strangely no cycles were involved because we are led to believe only cyclists do it and it's way more dangerous than a car doing it :)

All they can do is chip away now and then confiscating illegal eBikes and hopefully users get the message but they won't.
I'm a member of a deristricted eBike group and it annoys me.
So far I personally know 5 people who have had them confiscated with the last one being a Prison Officer.
His wife said "My hubby has had a bike like yours, it's a 1500 watt xxxx" and I said it isn't like mine, tell him to be careful.
She asked why, I explained and two months later it was gone.

The law is there to upheld society, what is wrong with asking for it to be followed. If you don’t like it then do something about it, get signature for a Parliament debate or work with your MP. Just because he is a Prison officer does not mean it is ok to break the law. I understand if you buy one without knowing it is illegal but knowing it is illegal and still riding it on the road is just wrong. There are legal options but people choose to ignore.

Just like current situation with shop lifting, not enough is being done and we have professional gang and other individuals joining in the spree.

Make it consistent and hit them hard, £300 DIY or £1k off the shelf, if police remove it a few times from an individual then they will stop buying. You can get points too on license, imagine loosing your license.

He didn't know and that's why I informed her.
£3500 he lost because he didn't know the law.
I honestly think most people don't know, we have a bloke in this thread who admits to having an illegal motor but there are no cops where he lives so it's OK.

There is no quick answer to problem like this. There is fundamental issue with this country, people don't take their action seriously and ignorance is not a get out of jail ticket. I have many hobbies and I research and do my research before I make any action. Let it be PCP Air Rifles, Ebike, Drone and even YouTube channel, everything has implications and legal limits. Just because it is readily available does not mean it is ok to use in public. £3.5k is an expensive lesson to learn but I bet he will not buy another anytime soon, it could even affect his job as it will be a traffic offence.

And to the other guy and any other who have an ebike which is non compliance to the current law, you have the freedom to do as you wish and I too enjoy the freedom of this country. But try not to bring anyone else down with your actions, going faster than 15mph with no helmet or bike gear on can really do some damage to yourself (please don't see this as just 15mph, I am talking about ebikes which can go a lot faster) . If you lose control and cause other to have an accident then it is even worse. A lot have ben said already about guys on road bike can go faster, and it is true that each case is difference but have a look at what people are doing with their high power bikes on the road. I don't even want to put links here as it will be like promoting their antics but search DIY Ebike guide and you will see so many illegal stuff is going on.

And please, just because others are running through red light it is not ok! This is how you get yourself and other killed.

Tripe which a lot of people never tasted or heard about, I find it accurately describe current Ebike issue we have on the road. I am sure a lot of people don't know about the current law and regulations, it may save someone loosing an expensive ebike.

All five people I know who had them confiscated had no idea of the law and thought they could have a 30mph to 45mph eBike because you know, it's just a cycle.

I think the UK education is very outdated. These are the things they should be teaching as a general subject instead of Latin ....
Also things like compound interest, assets finance, APR, mortgage all useful skills to help a better society and own survival. I think Martin Lewis is the only one pushing it forward to the government.

Imagine your son and daughter coming back from school telling you that you just bought an expensive bike which is illegal and can be taken away by the police :)

It is still an option in national curriculum “Latin is a language that can be taught in Key Stage 2 (KS2) of the UK's National Curriculum”
My son is learning that in school and he is in a grammar school, not private or Eton.

Apparently it helps kids to understand languages better, I find it amusing and it would be more useful to learn about society and general law instead.

Then that makes one kid in the last 60 years that I've ever heard of learning Latin in school. I think if you're looking to make space in the curriculum, you won't make much space removing Latin...

  • English
  • maths
  • science
  • design and technology
  • history
  • geography
  • art and design
  • music
  • physical education (PE), including swimming
  • computing
  • ancient and modern foreign languages (at key stage 2)
Take your pick, I only choose the most obscure one as an example and both my boy and girl had that option in school, or Spanish, French etc. religion RE is another amusing one for me.

Take your pick
I'm not sure your point? I agree with you, it's rather silly to be learning Latin (but from what you're saying it could have been French or Spanish and you chose Latin?!) I'm saying, if you remove Latin from any child's curriculum to add in what you want... it might just be your two kids that learn what you're wanting.

Mind you, of that list, I would have kept Spanish and bumped Music myself...

It does not need to bump off an entire subject to include general studies. On this forum or topic discussion most people are laser focused for quick fix or solution. I said “instead of Latin” because that is what my kids have as an option in school right now, it is not a plaster or band aid fix for every kid in the country

Yes, there are many things which I personally think it is outdated in ks1 and ks2 geography, music

Just like we will have professionals, police to go into school to give talks. It can be educated that way to raise awareness

Think of the KOMs, wont someone think of the KOMs!!!
All my KOMs are still on a road bike, my 250 watt 15.5mph eBikes can't get close.
I'm VERY protective of my few remaining KOM's, achieved between 2015 and 2019
Anyone on an eBike beating them gets reported !

The road closest to my house is pretty notorious for throttle ebikes - no one is taking that KOM off me ! :p

Tbh, it was more about the shock of hearing someone is being taught Latin. I'm almost 50 and honestly, I don't think I've ever heard of this being the case...

I used to work at a girls school where they still taught Latin and maybe still do. And that was just over 10 years ago.

This would all be a lot simpler if they just introduced easy to use methods of getting them registered and insured. This country really needs to move with the times.

If you want a 6000w ebike - no problem. Just register it, insure it and treat it legally the same way a 250cc moped would be.

You're not taking into account the people who are buying these illegal bikes, the majority believe electric bike = no tax, MOT or insurance.
