E46 USB Audio

One more thing, Say I got the Intravee and wanted to upgrade my CD based nav to DVD mkiv nav, is that just a simple plug in new nav and all done? Will then have better nav with it's better features + ipod tunes?

I can back up everything Fox is saying, as I fitted an Intravee and iPod into my own M myself a couple years back. It's flawless from an interface perspective. And if you don't mind pulling half your car internals apart to get the wires in, you can have the iPod in the front right glovebox, nice and handy, too. You'll need it there because the thing does have a habit of needing to be unplugged-and-plugged-back-in-again if you don't use it for a couple days.

Then again... am curious about this newer firmware, with the extra car info... maybe they fixed this niggle? Fox, is upgrading the firmware easy, do you know? Maybe just need an RS232 cable or something?

The niggle you are on about is an iPod problem - it puts itself into sleep if it isnt used for a certain period of time.

You don't need to unplug it, tho, simply press the centre button on the ipod.

The Intravee works best with the Mk4 computer - if you have a Mk3 some of the best bits don't work like the advanced search (list of playlists). I'd strongly recommend that you upgrade to a Mk4 before getting an Intravee. It is indeed plug and play.

Nope, just change the CD changer.

It doesnt recognise folders - it just plays all the music, so if you've got 139 tracks you get tracks 1-99 displayed on the display and then it sits at 99 as it plays 100, 101, etc etc, but hey, its better than nothing.

Yeah definitely! I'm using my phone at the moment via bluetooth but with the audio loss through the BT coupled with the dismal stock system my ears can't take it anymore!

Cheers for the info, I'll see if I can pick one up. Do you know if random works past 99? (If you know what I mean)

Pretty sure it does yea. I used it on the worst BMW head unit ever and it was fineish.

So you could control it through your ipod rather than the steering wheel? Intravee system

You control everything through your head unit and steering wheel. The options come up on your head units screen, etc etc. The ipod is in the boot.

Does Intravee work with ID3v2.3 ISO-8859-1 (the most compatible ID3v2 format) or just ID3v1 tags?

I guess so, never found a file it wont do.

You just need the Intravee Downloader software and a RS232 serial cable to update it.

The 'extras' are in beta test - if you ask you can get hold of a copy of the firmware though.

Some of the stuff is pretty cool - especially the auto unlock which if you have drive away locking enabled is really handy. The Intravee may not be able to control your mirrors if you have an E46 though as newer ones don't use the IBus apparently.

Just read this on the Intravee Quick Install Guide

The CHA-S634 (The preferred mp3 Alpine CD changer) will only read ID3 V1 tags, not ID3 V2 tags. You can have both types of tags on the same file, however it is strongly advised that you do not use V2 tags that have a lot of information, for example Album Art or lyrics, as this can slow down track browsing or, in some cases, prevent the CHA-S634 from reading the disk at all.

So that rules out a CD changer completely for me as all my mp3's have extended ID3v2 tags with comments etc and album art.

Hope the Intravee can handle them
