E60 M5 Spark plugs

Interestingly, some plugs have anti seize on them too, some people still put anti seize paste on them. Some people don't bother either way. Funny old world.

NGK plugs that have a silver looking shine to them have anti seize on them. I still put a small dab of copper grease on them, just because

I have never gapped new plugs tbh, they com preset unless they have had a knock.

Single electrode ones should always be done as makes have different gaps even using the same plug. Im too lazy to gap plugs, so I have always bought tripple electrode :D

I find this hard to believe. I've been changing spark plugs on cars for the best part of 16 years (obviously not all the time :p) and have never had to gap plugs.

Interestingly, the Swift I just did, single electrode, has 70k between spark plug changes but it does loads of short journeys.

What torque setting do you do them up to then now you have adjusted the friction at the head interface?

Im pretty anal about then but then I have OEM index'd spark plugs and have to buy the correct A B C or D to match the stamping on each plug hole in the head.

Having worked on cars for over 20 years, it has been accepted wisdom for a lot longer.

Well done to Danny for going balls deep and doing them himself... good on ya. So, on the subject of this M5, any running problems, or everything still working well?

I just do finger tight, then a quarter turn

Come on, its just 10 spark plugs.

Danny, put the S85 into an E30, give the people a reason to really go

Engineers! Serious; 120% of the time, all the time :D

General car mechanics; it just sorta works. Thanks for the tolerances Engineers :D

I do mine whatever feel right, using my calibrated wrist. Mine and most torque wrenches only start around 28NmBeans with plugs around 11NmBeans, so we are mostly **** outta luck!

Do you really need to torque up spark plugs, really? Never used a specific setting, just tight enough that they aren't going to jiggle about.

Agreed it is only 10 spark plugs but judging by the comments on this thread you'd think it was a gearbox rebuild. People having a go because he was doing it himself save wasting money. Caused a right stir lol.

TBH most of the comments were from the perspective of the warranty and service history affecting value on a car like an M5, rather than it suddenly becoming an impossible job.

There were obviously some references to the job itself as it is more involved than your average inline 4 cyclinder and many people would rather spend the £100 to get someone else to do it regardless of the stamp in the book aspect but that wasn't really the main point most people were making.

:)

I have a torque wrench for other parts of the car, my mechanic mate said he's always used finger tight (through extension bar), quarter turn and never had any issues with it.

There's no load on them, last thing you want is them being stuck in there!

But if you're not checking the gap how do you know it's correct? Saying that the only car I've had that needed the gap changing was a 200sx that was running non standard plugs.

Hi mate

The car is fine, tbh its a weekend car, I spent most my days driving new vw/vuax/ford/audi at work and I do 11-12 hour days so I only really drive the M5 at weekends, Since I bought it done around 900 miles in it

For the ammount of use it gets, I should have bought a supercharged E46 M3 lol
