EA Closing all BF2 servers?

right, better get bf2 and PR on the download again xD looks tasty in that trailer!

got in PR with the first competitive clan I joined and we'd have 8v8 or 16vs16. always really tense and a lot more thought out than bf3/4.

really annoyed at ea/dice/whoeverelse for not allowing mod support on these newer engines. PR would look so insane on FB3!!!! but then again...... I dread to think of the bugs and errors... then again.... the mod community might find fixes/work around for them.

if only you could somehow run with the bf2 code but inject the graphics from bf4 :p

*shudders* I actually disliked BF4's graphics, found they were blurry and weird lol. Loved BF3's on the other hand, they were great. When colortweaker worked before the Aftermath patch (removing the blue-tint from the game) it was near perfect!

no shudder at all :D just need to get sweetfx on there buddy!! ;) gets rid of most of that damn pointless blur :)

the bf3 aftermath map with the littlebirds on was the biggest OMG HOLY COW moment when I played that map for the first time with sweetfx...... pants were jizzed in :p all the buildings were soooo sharp and although the colours were a bit bright.... they were no longer ******* blue haha!

maybe on the new unreal engine instead? ;)

Actually never tried sweetfx with BF4. I do recall seeing some screens though from China Rising, made it look nicer and less washed out!

I always found BF2 to be great fun but the hit reg was all over the place, especially if someone was running side on to you and there were quite a few OP vehicles. Single shot kills from Helicopter TV missiles for example.

Yea hit reg is a bit all over the place, especially full auto, even at a range of 2 metres :)

My only real gripe with the game is the removal of the ability to throw c4 in patch 1.5, really made it no fun at all chasing down tanks when u can only drop it at your feet. Not helpful when the slightest touch from a tank results in a death.

Would be helpful if people could put the website link - revivebf2.com - into their signatures to help spread the word to people who haven't ventured into this thread.

Is there a way to unlock fps? It's locked at 100, I tried game.fpslock 1000 but no change. I want to make full use of my 120Hz :D

Funny though cos it's using less than 20% GPU power and temp never goes over 39°C (GTX 770).

[R-DEV]AncientMan has posted a new entry in their blog: [R-DEV]AncientMan blog of Project Reality Forums titled 'PRMasterServer'

This entry is located at:

Here is the message that has just been posted:
***************
Hey guys, time for another blog. No pictures, just a bunch of text, how boring hey...

So as I'm sure everyone is well aware, with PR:BF2 v1.2 it brings in support for PRMasterServer. But what is PRMasterServer, what does it do, why is it so important? Well let me explain...

With GameSpy shutting down (http://www.realitymod.com/forum/f380-project-reality-news/129123-pr-bf2-gamespy.html), it takes with it the online services for Battlefield 2 (as well as many other games that were also announced in the shutdown). While BF2 is still playable right now (it shuts down June 30 according to EA), after the services are shut down you can no longer login to your online accounts, there's no more server list, there's no more online play. It will kill BF2, and all associated mods (unless you only play co-op offline of course).

So yeah, that's not good, not good at all. Screw that I say, PR:BF2 still has players, it needs to live right? So in order to keep it alive and kicking, we needed to develop a replacement for GameSpy. This means a new login server, a server list server, and CD Key verification (or rather, say yes to all CD Keys ;)). GameSpy also handles BF2 statistics, but since PR:BF2 doesn't support stats, it's not replaced. So off I go to code it up. I'd like to note here that there was some code floating around on the internets for a login server emulator. We did look into using this, but ultimately it wasn't up to scratch, and it wasn't used. Besides, the login server is only half the issue.

Before anything happened, FH2 contacted me to see what were our plans. Because I already had custom written code for all the client-side implementation of GameSpy's functionality, as seen in PRLauncher (login) and PRSPY (server list), it was not an issue for me to do the server-side functionality. So I told them that I'd get it done no worries and they could use our server if they wanted. They were cool with that (well of course they were :p), so FH2 was on-board.

And yeah, when I had some spare time after work, I slapped some code together, and PRMasterServer was born. Took about 3 afternoons, maybe 20 hours all up to get it all working. Of course, after that testing had to be done, stress testing, bugs fixed, etc. But since releasing v1.2, apart from a couple of issues that were fixed reasonably quickly, it's been pretty solid. And PR:BF2 survives another day :D.

Now that's all well and good for PR:BF2 and FH2, but what about the rest of Battlefield 2? Well there's been a few other people taking up the slack, ReviveBF2 (http://revivebf2.com/) being the main group that have been getting all the media attention. But they are yet to release their solution. Looks like they've run into some issues with their server list, but I'm sure they can sort it all out in the next 10 days or so. Which leads me onto my next point.

Because I'm a nice guy, in order to help the other people working on solutions for BF2, BF2142, and any other game affected by the GameSpy shutdown, I've open-sourced PRMasterServer (https://github.com/AncientMan2002/PRMasterServer) under the GPLv3 license. Hopefully it can prove useful to others working on GameSpy replacements, and hopefully we can keep on playing our favourite games long after the publishers give up...

But alas, any online service does have a use by date, and PRMasterServer is no exception. It does cost money to run these servers, and yes the rumors are true that I pay for this out of my own pocket (I don't receive PR donations - they only go to the website and subversion server payments for PR:BF2, PR:A3 and PR2). But it's all good, PR:BF2 will continue for a long time yet if I have anything to say about it, today is not the day it dies.

That'll do for this wall of text, enjoy, and happy online gaming

Dont forget that BF2 has bots. Had many good laughs playing 64 v 64 bot matches.

Its a shame BF3 and BF4 dont have them

Or did I say a dirty word!

quick Q. can I register my bf2 account/key on origin and download through there? or how do I go about it? :) (it's been a while :p )

or if wanting to play PR... is the 6.4GB PR download just the expansion or does it include the game too? (seems too big to be just PR content but I could be wrong.... used to be separate)

Is BF2 dead?

Ijust tried firing it up an keep getting 'the server refused connection' when i try to log in to my account.

Is there any way still to play

Register and download the patch and you can continue playing .There are loads of servers and players 24/7 .

There are servers that would be a better description rather than loads. When I was playing few yeras ago there was almost 1000+ servers and many to choose from but now you are lucky to have 6-7 servers will full during EURO daylight times and when its america turns you are lucky to get 3-4. BF2 is dying but i would predict it has few years left still but the end is in sight unfortunately.

The game just never recovered from EA just dropping it.

There are Lott's of servers running right now ,last look there was over 200.still going after 8 years nearly. Bf3 and 4 won't be in 8 years

Funnily enough I started playing again a couple of days ago. Such a quality game and still unmatched as a multiplayer FPS to this day.

I used the BF2Hub client. Does anyone know if all these different clients see the same amount of servers?

depending on what client you use depends on how many servers there are . There was dozens of fully populated 64 player servers last night
