I like Steam, but one of my main gripes is that we have to pay an initial amount to get the game then we're subjected to waves of DLC that in order to have the full product you have to buy.

Sounds to me like that is to much hard work, throw in multiplayer and let them carry on playing the same maps over and over with much smaller updates required and less effort.
