Earthquake?

Felt it here in Chippenham. Thought it was my sexual prowess but the quake lasted longer :)

Knocked a couple of pictures over in our house but we've survived.

Interesting. Actually, very interesting. The thing is that natural earthquakes tend to last a little longer than 2-3 seconds.
 
The last few in the UK have been pretty short - maybe that is the nature of earthquake activity in the UK (I have no idea) - superficially it can look like an explosion rather than a typical quake signature.
 
I felt it too, West midlands / Warwickshire. Probably the biggest earthquake I've ever noticed in this country

I like the way on the EMSC site, etc. mag 4 quake happens elsewhere in the world and like 3 people write testimonials on it, happens in the UK and nearly 2000 people submit testimonials on it.

Even the 7.2 in Mexico has 1/10th the number.

Haha I was scrolling down thinking I'll have to dig that picture and post it but nope, beaten to it!
Had all my friends asking on facebook if I noticed it, but was out on my mountain bike so would never notice a quake that small whilst bouncing down a rocky trial!

It is a bit funny to watch when you live in a place that gets a lot of them, but earthquakes are weird when you're not used to them. We've had 10 minor ones in the last 2 days, worst I've felt was a 6.4 right by my city 2 years ago, living on the 7th floor. I get why people in the UK would be a bit startled, but it is sort of cute to read about from over here.

Not sure you'll know the answer to this question but are building restrictions and laws a lot tighter over there due to the frequency of quakes?

In theory yes, after the big (7.3) earthquake in 1999, new building codes were put in to place, I think modelled on California - though I could be wrong on that. In practice, there's still too much corruption and corner cutting, with the right people paid off. The 6.4 I mentioned before only toppled one building in my city, which was found to have empty paint cans in the hollows of the concrete pillars.

There's a lot of stuff I love about this country, but the "it'll do" attitude to many things is not one of them.

when you live in a warzone and your house is shaking from the impact of bombs and cruise missiles and your wondering if your house could be next, its cute to read about people bragging about the size of their earth quakes.
 
Wiltshire here - felt the same today and thought I was freaking out!

Wow. I knew Newcastle was bad, but I didn't realize it was that bad.
