Easyriders Cinema Room

Where are the seats going in that picture, its just with that amount of toe in you have on the speakers the sound is pretty much meeting where the rug is.

The seats are going on the back wall.

I have ordered another Rug to help with the acoustics of the room.

Yeah, see how it goes.

I think you might be able to locate the bass sound if you put it there though. That can be really annoying when you're watching a film and all of the explosions are coming from one area of the room!

Might be OK though if it's not too close to where you (or someone else) are sat. You're more than welcome to borrow an SPL for setting it up/finding the best position.

Cheers mate,

I'm looking at getting some corner Bass traps installed. Might aswell get the room sounding right and they are not to pricey.:)

Oooh, that's a bit specialised!

What's makes you think you'll need something like that then, the hard flooring? Not too ugly are they?

Bit of fun too:D

The hard flooring could not be avoided.

A few people with far more knowledge than me of home cinema and room

acoustics have said that the hard floor, although not ideal, is not really a

problem and can easily be worked around and the placement of some bass

traps can improve a room no end.

Of course the look of them is subjective but with the Dark grey front walls

etc...I reckon they will look kind of cool :p

Some sound analysis of the room.

The estimated reverb time in your room is 1.9 seconds. We need to get that down to about 0.5 - 0.4 seconds for an ideal home cinema set-up. The rug and the carpet will reduce that time a little but you will still need some acoustic panels to reduce to to an acceptable level.

So this will involve some acoustic panels in the rear wall, perhas something like 4 Mini Wall Panels hung as diamonds to create something a little more aesthetically pleasing as well. You will also need some acoustic panels on the side walls. I calculate that 3 on either wall will bring the reverb down to an better level. However with a curtain on the left hand wall you should get away with just two panels on that side.

The other concern i have are the low end frequencies. I ran your room through a room mode calculator and the result show you have a domination of room modes from 35Hz - 114Hz. Now to treat the very low end frequencies would require very large bass traps or helmholtz resonators which again would be very large. However we can smooth out the 50Hz upwards very easily with a Corner Sound Trap Panel in each corner. These panels will also help to reduce the reverb time so you will have better control in the room at low end frequencies along with a shot reverb time which means less ringing and a less live room for more accurate sound reproduction.

Wow the science of sound!:p

Most rooms in homes have modes around those frequencies I believe. You can usually get around them by trying out different positions for the sub, and checking each one with an SPL. A feedback destroyer can also help to flatten out the response. Also, I think that Audyssey is quite good at sorting out reverb.

All of that stuff, particularly reverb time will change when you get the sofas and chairs in anyway so it's a bit of a waste of time checking it now. Unless of course that's already taken into account.

I have to say I think that those acoustic trap things will spoil the look of your room really. It's all a bit more recording studio than home cinema for my liking. I'd just get it as best as I could with some sub positioning and an FBD but if your real interested then go for it.

I hope you're not paying too much for that service!

Moved the speakers now.

I prefer it :)

Personally think the fronts are too far out now. Also the centre can you get it out of the cabinet at all and give it some room to breathe (can't remember whether the TV is staying where you've got it or getting wall mounted behind the screen).

I'll run some tests and see...I can always move them in a bit:)

I have been told to insualte the front speaker in situ with foam around....

Hide that heater cable :p

Put a truncated floor coloured trunk on the floor to do this :D

Have to say this is one of my favourite setups I have seen, especially out of all of them on avforums. It looks soo clean, well laid out, great workmanship, and love the colours, especially the dark grey wall.

Awesome :)

Yep, have to say its stuff like this thats make me consider buying a house. Iv always rented, but obviously cant start a project such as this no matter how much id like to.

Hats off to you mate, great job. I think you will proberbly end up wanting better speakers in a few months, especally a better centre. but for the price you got them at their a steal.

Update,

I have decided that the sound qualities of the room need addressing. The room is too lively.

Rather than just address the issue with more rugs and furniture,I have decide to treat the room with acoustic sound panels and bass traps.

I have worked out the cost and I can make a sound panel for around 10 quid.

I have ordered some Acoustic transparent material (speaker material) at £1.99 per 1/2 metre and ordered 30 quids worth.

Enough to make 8 panels including the bass traps.

Now this may sound excessive but after much reading....everyone who has

treated their home cinema to sound acoustic treatment as marvelled at the

improvement in their sound so much they descibe that listening to the Audio

with the acoustic treatment in is like Putting on audio glasses where

everything comes into focus.:D

So the things I need:

4x2 FT Rockwool from Wickes
wooden battons
Corner Brackets
Acoustic transparent material

Here is a pic of one getting made to give you an idea. And in situ

Wooden Frame with slab of 2" rockwool in side covered with material

Of course I will post my own build when I make them. :)

is it possible to get something printed on that black material? make it look like a print/painting (like your Tony Montana pic) instead of just black?

Ditto. Saving for a house and looking to buy with the mrs in 18months-2yrs from now with hopefully a 25% deposit. Might try and put a bit more away into teh deposit fund and allocate it as 'AV' budget :D

Now that's what I call dedication! :D

How about putting that rockwool in the back of those prints you've already got on the wall? I assume that they're canvas stretched over baton frames. I might have to do that with the ones that I have now!
