Eating breakfast at work

The first place i worked had a staff kitchen and everyone started at 8:30 with breakfast, working times were 9 to 5:30 but free breakfast if you was in at 8:30.

I eat before I leave for work, have actually started getting up 15 minutes earlier so that I can cook myself porridge rather than just have cereal.

But plenty of people do eat their breakfast at work, we have a canteen and the tea lady brings round your breakfast order to your desk at 1015 along with a brew, same for dinner at 1230 and another brew at 1500, obviously if you want anything outside those times you can go down to the canteen and get it. 1015 is just to late for me, Porridge keeps me going from 630 till lunch.

Don't see a problem with it, nor would I ever understand anyone complaining about someone leaving their desk if they were doing a job that required any sort of thinking. You're paid for output, the bums on seat managment is archaic.

You're supposed to get up and walk around for 5 minutes every hour anyways, so grabbing a bit of toast and eating it while you're reading/thinking is no big deal. Anywhere I've worked smokers spend less time at their desk than anyone else, and over 90% of people seem to think thats just fine.

Not that it bothers me, you could be at your desk all day browsing and doing less than anyone of those disgusting wasters. ;)

I've just noticed some people go for number twos during the working day this is disgusting you should do it at home before work they are basically being paid to poo

I do it sometimes. Others do it every day. Don't see the problem with it unless people start to abuse the freedom to do it.

Where do you draw the line then OP? Is eating at the desk during my own lunch break allowed? Can I take 20 minutes to pooh, or 7.5? Ir do it at home? What about walking round the building every hour or two for some air? Coffee and tea and water = a good 10 trips a day to the machine I would have thought. Chatting to colleagues.... can I do that? Can easily waste a hour through the day through chatting.

I do it every day. Gives me an extra 15 minutes in bed and means I can wake up before eating (always have trouble eating for the first hour or so in the morning). I normally arrive about 20 minutes early though because of trains. Several of the others do it as well so it's pretty typical.

OP you should try it, it's good! And you can do some work like answer emails while you're doing it. ;)

Yup, porridge with cinnamon wins, takes ages to make at home, much easier to munch at work whilst checking emails and planning the day.

I am hoping OP is a troll otherwise it is just retarded.

We start at 9:30am, by 10am most people have rocked up. Some people like to get a full english breakie from the cafe across the corrider and eat that at their desks.

Also we often supply food in our meeting rooms - fruit and drinks etc... some people bring food with them to meetings, breakfast or lunch....

How people can possibly see this as disgusting is beyond me. Just let them get on with it.

Sitting by someone stuffing their face with hot smelly food at 08:00 when you are on a conference call isn't the most pleasant of experiences.

Depends what it is... and if I was ill/hungover. I would draw the line at smoked haddock brought over steaming away on my neighbours desk....if he didn't give me some. :)

I see nothing wrong with this at all. Some peoples bodies need the energy at that time of day. I dont buy the "paid to work not to eat" thing @ all :) . It keeps employees happy and I doubt it messes up their work. Our office is really REALLY easy going on this. In fact we just had a new fridge & microwave installed in there and all of us bring food in. People chowing down all day. If phone rings and my mouths full I just wave at a buddy who picks it up!

I agree if someones blasting through a burger right near you while youre on a conference call would be annoying but at my work all con-calls are in a dedicated room away from the office. They are video calls anyway so no-one will eat while on there lol.

This sort of behaviour does irk me a bit too; I've had colleagues before that consider it a right not a privilege and will say something along the lines of "in a minute when I've finished my breakfast" after the start of the working day. I've no issue with people eating at work, it is more the time being taken out of the working day. Some people also take showers at work (fair enough if have cycled in etc but again should be arriving in time to have it and start work at 9am in that case). Same goes for fag breaks, officially staff are allowed 10mins per day (recommended 1x 5min am, 1x 5min pm) yet often people will turn up, have breakfast, spend 2mins checking emails then go out for 10mins of smoking/chatting every hour.

In spite of what I've written above I'm not much of a clockwatcher who sits around worrying about what time people are clocking on and off, I just think there is a bit of double standards going on when e.g.
arrive at work 09:05 - start work at 09:05 is deemed poor, yet e.g.
arrive at work 09:00 - start work at 09:15 is fine

I'm actually quite pragmatic when it comes to timekeeping, I think it is more efficient to cut people some slack if they are then working hard when the pressure is on, but there comes a point when you wonder if people are taking the ****, shaving when they get to work etc.
