eBay buyer wants to return item before he's received it :(

Remembering in the future to jot down the serial number, it makes it a whole lot easier. :(

I'm of two minds, part of me would accept & hope he isn't a scammer, then fall back on insurance if the item returned isn't genuine. The other is simply refuse saying that those are not the terms you agreed to & due to the known frequency of people returning faulty items for this kind of electrical good (phones/tablets) you are not in a position to take this risk.

Ultimately it won't be your choice.

Ebay will make that decision for you, and they have set up processes to ensure things don't slip through in breach of the consumer rights act.

Even if that means sellers have to accept that buyers can return the item on the weakest excuse or evidence.

What did you think was going to happen by making it difficult for the buyer to get a refund? The buyer always had an easy process for a return and refund in his hand.

I bet he used he girlfriend or someone other ebay account to buy one cheaper so he going to return yours..
You will get just type of thing happen a lot on ebay..

Have a look at completed listings on ebay and see if any have sold for less then he payed for yours...;)

I've seen it said I was being confrontational, I genuinely wasn't and hope it didn't come across that way.

Kind of wish I took elmarko's advise about refusing as I did say returns not accepted.

Rereading your post, "confrontational" may have been the wrong word.

Either you accept a return and make it as easy as possible for the buyer, or set out a clear position that unfortunately you cannot accept a return for changing your mind.

The latter position of course can be trumped by the ebay returns rules and you'd have to accept that may happen.

Problem is as a seller on ebay you are screwed any which way. All the power is with buyers. Even though you said no returns under Paypal buyer has protection and can claim agianst you.

In a word as a seller on ebay you are always taking a gamble on who buys your stuff.

Ebay has had it far better off selling through specific forums like this one (why didn't you?).

Just say no if you said no returns accepted. Really simple.

He can try and be an arse through the ebay process, but just hold your ground. Hopefully you took your cash out of paypal before claim started so its not in limbo during the process?

Tell him he can sell it on if he wants.

I do prefer selling on forums etc. and I did try and sell it here. Problem is people don't want to pay the going rate on forums. What I usually do is find the average sold price on ebay then take off 15% for fees etc. to arrive at a forum price but quite often members won't offer close to that price :(

If he refuses delivery he'll get is money back otherwise I won't accept it back and go from there.

Thanks for the advice everyone :)

Why would you choose ebay over the MM for an item like this? You said you buy a lot so the price reduction works both ways.

I hate ebay and very rarely use it.

I've tried selling on MM several times and people just want stuff cheap and your listing gets buried very quickly by new ones.

Ebay is still the best method to sell. I always use Collectplus courier insured and signed for to send items. One buyer recently said he did not receive an item and I was able to get a pod qucikly and provide it to Paypal with whom he raised the dispute. Paypal then sided with ME against the buyer as I was able to provide evidence it had been received.

If you pay by Paypal with Collectplus which also links in with your ebay account, and they need to pay out insurance incase of a parcel going missing then they pay the money straight into your Paypal account.

Surely if you buy from the MM then the price balances out?

Anyway, I have used eBay lots in the past but I got sick of the time wasters. Example is one person winning a phone I was selling, then refusing to pay. After a few emails and stories about not having any money, I searched their purchase history to find they had purchased the same model from someone else after winning mine. I called them out and they were blatantly saying "So what, you can't do anything".

That's just one example. When eBay removed the ability for sellers to give out negative feedback to time wasters they just helped facilitate it.

I doubt you'll get scammed, doesn't sound anything like a scam if anything you accepted the return as a gesture of good will, you were well within your rights to say "Sorry, But can't accept a refund for that reason" and all would be done.

However them following the eBay return process is fine and correct to cover both himself and the OP and should be returned at the expense of the buyer with the initial £11 postage refunded, the buyer will then get a refund.

If it was a scam, there was nothing you could do anyway, bills and mentioning no refund for weeks was silly IMO.

If you allow him to return it for a refund then you will get your ebay final fee and any listing fee refunded along with the Paypal fee also. Just takes awhile which is a pain to some people who don't like things hanging in the air like that.

I was able to report my buyer for saying he didn't receieve item when he did so I guess if he was to try it again in the future then ebay would close his account? You can also leave a positive but negative review on his account to warn other ebay sellers.

I always read the comments on someones account before sending an item off or before buying anything.

If you sent it in the original box the serial number of the tablet will also be printed on it, hopefully that will give you something to check against when it does get to returned to you.
