eBay buyer wants to return item before he's received it :(

Yeah hopefully you went for a bit more than the standard £50 insurance.

Warn him that if he doesn't refuse delivery he'll have to accept the item.

Thanks chaps I'll message him about refunding me £11 and refusing delivery.

Will Royal Mail return the tablet straight back to me without any further charge?

BTW I sent it via RMSD so it's insured up to £500 :)

You could say you will accept it back, but you have already used the funds for another purchase, so it'll be a few weeks before you can. That way you look like you're trying to be helpful, but he might think this is too much hassle and decide to keep it. You could suggest it might be easier for him to just sell it on himself.

Never had this before and would be a bit annoyed as it takes time and effort to package things up well and take to the post office. At least it does for me as I have to go out of my way to post things.

The guy can just raise a dispute on PayPal... The idea that you could refuse the return is just wrong. Accept the idea that it's coming back and just ask for the postage. Fees will be refunded when it's returned.

OK, here's what I've sent.

"This is going to cause me a big headache as I've used the money to pay off a bill, any chance your "Lass" can return the one she bought or you could sell It yourself?

Best I can do if you absolutely must return it is for you to refuse delivery tomorrow so it's returned to me unopened and also refund me £11 postage, it will take me a couple of weeks to get the money together to refund you but once I have it I'll cancel the transaction so I can recover my fees from PayPal and eBay and refund you £265.

If you do still want to return it's important that you refuse delivery tomorrow or else I can't accept it back sorry.

Can you let me know what you decide?"

And his reply

"I know sorry buddy and thanks for accepting.... If we were to do the return, then eBay have their own tracked return policy... So I'll initiate a return on eBay, once you accept it... I will send it back with eBays tracked postage method (unopened) simply not accepting it, despite it being paid for doesn't leave me in a good position.

I trust that won't be a problem?"

Where does this leave me?

Reiterate that due to previous experiences with scammers and having to inform the police of criminal damage and fraudulent eBay transactions, the only way you're accepting the return is if he refuses delivery.

He will sign for it anyway then initiate an eBay return, which you refuse.

He then claims it arrived damaged or is faulty and opens a dispute, at which point he sends the item back and, having received it back and confirmed it's your item (presumably with a nice crack in the screen), you claim from Royal Mail.

This way, the worst place you can be is that you have your money and a broken tablet.

tell him that refusing the delivery is fine as it will show via tracking that he hadnt received it

telling him that you wouldnt refund him for weeks was silly though, dunno why you thought that was a good thing

With all the uncertainty and dishonesty on ebay I'm honestly amazed people use it at all. I use it for cheap chinese tat and that's it. I wouldn't even consider buying or selling anything over £10 on it.

Before I've even had chance to reply to his last message he's initiated a return :(

Oh heck, really feels like a scam now,

This is the reply I sent him just before I got the email from eBay.

You will be fine as the tablet is tracked through eBay and they would see you have not accepted delivery and would come down on your side in a dispute, however if I receive the tablet back and for arguments sake it's not the same one I sent out, then it's my word against yours that the box was opened and eBay usually come down in buyers favour in these circumstances as far as I'm aware, this would not leave me in a good position :(

If you refuse delivery tomorrow and refund me £11 for postage I'll cancel the transaction and you'll get your refund once I have the tablet back. You won't have to wait 2 weeks.

We both have good feedback and I'm not is scammer so be assured I have every intention of refunding you as long as you do what I asked

What's my next move?

I bought something online and contacted them to cancel it and they had the delivery company (Yodel) return it, so i expect you can with royal mail.

This doesn't strike me as a scam. Sounds like you're both desperate to not be out of pocket (of course) and a bit suspicious of each other :)

if the worst comes to the worst then maybe just dont answer the door when the postie returns it?? then he'l get it back = no refund due?
