Ebay feedback 'etiquette'

I'd expect the buyer to leave feedback first. That said, I wouldn't expect anyone to leave feedback until both parties are satisfied that anything that could have been done, has been done (in the event of something going wrong)

For example, I bought a license for some software on e-bay. Saved about 50% in the process and it was all official. However, the software makers took about a week longer than expected (took two weeks from when I paid to me getting the info) due to whatever reason. I paid instantly but I didn't get any feedback until I'd left some.

I wouldn't expect to have got any either.
 
If I'm selling, I leave feedback when payment has been received and the item has been posted. I also punch in the tracking number into Paypal at the same as leaving feedback. When the buyer receives the item, I expect them to leave me feedback.

If I'm buying, I expect the seller to leave me feedback once their side of the transaction has been completed - ie: they received payment, and have posted the item. Once I receive the item, I then leave feedback.

I think the above is completely fair for both the seller and buyer.
 
OK, I recently sold a graphics card, and I posted it out the day I recieved the payment. It is currently stuck in the RM strike backlog. I just recieved a message from the buyer asking me why I haven't left feedback for him, and saying I shouldn't be waiting for him to leave feedback first.

I know there are no rules, but I always thought the 'done thing' was buyer first? That's always been the way I've worked. Indeed, most ebay shops require the buyer to leave feedback first. I mean, what if he decided to blame me for a delay that was out of my control and leave me bad feedback, I wouldn't be leaving him positive feedback if he did that.

You're in the right.

Once the transaction has been completed to everyone's satisfaction, then positive feedback can be left.

As a seller, it gives you a bit of leway if things don't go right.
Like idiots who'd give you negative feedback for slow delivery because RM have been on strike, if you'd already left positive for them.
 
In my opinion the seller should leave feedback once the buyer has done his job. Paid for the goods.

If you are simply wanting the buyer to leave first so as the seller you can retaliate to negative feedback then I reckon that goes against what the feedback system is all about.

As a regular seller I always leave feedback as soon as the person has paid. If you do your job right as the seller you will have little problem. In 4 years (and over 2500 transactions) I have had one unfair negative feedback and I discussed it with the buyer who thereafter retracted the feedback.

I've bought and sold regularly on eBay, and agree with that -nothing wrong with a bit of faith :)

It's not about retaliating though. If the buyer gave negative feedback when there was no legitimate reason to do so then they don't deserve positive feedback. I have 100% feedback myself, if somebody affected my 100% with no good reason then they simply don't deserve positive feedback, regardless of wether they paid quickly or not.
 
It annoys me when sellers email me "reminding" me to leave feedback when they have not done the same first. After all i completed my end of the deal way before they did.

That sounds like retaliating to me. :p

I suppose it differs if you are a private or a business seller. As a business seller my view is the customer is always right. If they leave a neg with no legitimate reason, I'll look to resolve their problem and ask them to retract it.
 
Pffft i leave feedback once i recieve... stops any comments been said and you not been annoyed at not getting your own back on the little nub as you know youll be right tbh..

Also, i recieved an item this morning which i was asleep upon arrivallol so its in the depot, after looking at the paper thing it says... sorry but you were out... 10.04 i wernt out :D ermmm. okay it dosnt actually say what type or parcel it was, just says royal mail stuff etc and how to get it redelivered...

Negative Feedback: Card said I was out when I was actually in bed. Terrible service.

The seller should leave feedback as soon as payment is made imo. If the buyer doesnt leave any then so-be-it. If the buyer posts poor feedback then that is what the "respond to feedback" function is for. As a seller I always leave feedback as soon as I have been paid.

my friend from nigeria pays quickly, usually via western union, then he nabs it back quickly :p
 
I disagree, I was actually on about this today.

I always feel the seller should leave feedback first, after all, when he's paid you there is nothing else for him to do. He's done his part perfectly by giving you payment. If I sell something I ALWAYS give positive feedback if someone pays me, even before I send the object out.

But Feedback is optional so neither party has to, seller could say yes this buyer is great then the buyer does one and leaves a bad feedback or vice versa.

tbh people are very wary about feedback now.

It's not though. How can somebody deserve positive feedback if they've been unfair? There's more to a transaction than simply paying for the item IMO.

As a side note, if the card does get 'lost' due to the backlog, am I expected to give a refund?

Just had some conflict over this myself.

Being a trusting chap, I used to leave positive feedback once the buyer had paid for the item. However with the never-ending stream of numpties joining Ebay, I've now swapped to only leaving feedback once the buyer has received the goods and given me feedback. As explained in the Ebay help screens, either method is perfectly valid. There is NO obligation for the seller to leave feedback first.

Sold an item last week - buyer paid promptly. I emailed on the day of sale stating that goods would be shipped next day and that I would provide tracking details. No reply from buyer.

I ship next day as promised (in the morning) and even upgrade the postage to Special Delivery instead of the recorded which I had stated on the auction (more for my own peace of mind than anything else). Email the buyer to confirm the goods have gone and supply the SD tracking number. No reply from buyer.

Check RM site next day, parcel delivered ok. No contact from buyer or feedback.

Next day I get feedback.....neutral, with a comment of ".......".

W.T.F? :confused:

Perfect transaction, goods in perfect condition, great communication, better shipping than advertised.....and I get neutral feedback, without any contact from the buyer? I can only assume that it was due to me not leaving feedback first.

Emailed buyer to ask for explanation. No reply.

Two days later, buyer got negative feedback (first I've left in 7 years).

im just about to leave a negative feedback, i bought something for just £9 but never received it even though the seller told me he posted the item again and again, then he stopped replying to my emials, he left me a positive feedback after i had paid for the item,

had to get my money back at the and from paypal, he surelly deservs that negative feedback,
